STORY TIME: Money can’t buy everything

By Mariam Magsi

Naveed was a very wealthy boy. He could afford almost anything in the world and could go anywhere, too. Rich children are usually also selfish and spoiled but this was not the case with Naveed. He was quite sensible and compassionate. He made sure never to hurt anyone and involved many others in his daily activities.

The only problem with Naveed was that he hated studying. He had no interest in any subject be it literature or mathematics. He refused to ever pass decently in any subject and became worse steadily. When questioned about his future he always said that he need not worry when he had so much wealth. But fate played a cruel joke on this innocent lad.

For many weeks now Naveed had been noticing the fact that his father was constantly worried about business deals and other matters. Of course, they still lived comfortably but suddenly something was different. His parents became too conscious of their regular expenditures. It so happened that he was even taken out of his private school and put into a public school. He had no problem making new friends and immediately acquainted himself with a shy but awfully generous boy. All the matters at home were a direct hint for Naveed to start bucking up in school but he became even worse at this new institution.

One night Naveed was having dinner with his parents when he noticed his father sweating profusely. He put his napkin to his side, cleared his throat and said, “I have something to say to you all today. The past few weeks have been very difficult. I have lost the company and all our money is gone. We will have to evacuate this house by tomorrow. But I hope the future can still hold some positive aspects for us.”

Naveed was shocked to hear this. His mother too could do nothing but stare at her husband. Naveed had never thought a day like this would come. He ran to his bedroom and kept awake the whole night thinking of his past, present and future.

From that day onwards Naveed became a steady and hard-working student. Despite all the problems in his family, like moving out of their house into a very congested apartment and having to do away with most of their luxuries, he worked very hard in school and improved amazingly. Gradually he came first in class. In a few years he became known as the brightest student first in his school and then in the country.

As he grew older he became quite wise and mature. He would pick up new things very quickly. After graduation, he received many offers from foreign universities to join them. Finally he won a scholarship for Harvard Law School where he studied criminal law. Naveed became a very famous lawyer who set up his own law firm. He had realized that it wasn’t wealth that got people everywhere. It was striving for the best and earning your own livelihood that earned you wealth and respect. He also realized that education was a very essential and important part of every person’s life.
