DVD decoder QUESTION: Whenever I try to play a DVD on Windows Media Player, the following message appears: “Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.” What should I do? Bilal Khalid bilalkhalid700@hotmail.com
EDITOR’S REPLY: WMP does not directly support DVDs. It does have the relevant built in decoders and Microsoft does not provide them either. You will need a third party software like 'Cyberlink DVD Player' or 'WinDVD 5', if you'd like to play DVDs on your system. You can download both from www.download.com.
Internet sharing problem I made a home network of two PC's. The connection is enabled as multilayer games are running on LAN one which is on P-III, I use internet with an internal modem of conexent chip. The other is P-II. I made connection. The games are stated to play on LAN but internet is on P-III. I shared the internet connection from right click to properties of connection to Paknet, in advance tab and disabled firewall. Then I checked all the check boxes in the settings of internet dial-up connection's properties' advance tab. Naveed Abdul Sattar naveed.nas@gmail.com
You can use the windows built in ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) service or download and use Proxy+ from www.download.com. It's one of the best (and free) proxy servers available on the web and setup is literally 1-2-3. That will help you to use your internet connection on both systems.
Hard disk I have P-III computer, it has 600 MHz possessor and 128 MB ram. The problem is that the hard drive does not work. When I start PC a message appears “Operating system is not found. What should I do to solve this problem? Mehmood Khan Karachi
If you're a proper technical expert, I would advise to remove your hard disk and install a new one to check if the problem lies in the BIOS settings, motherboard or the hard disk itself. But if you're not, than get a proper technical help. This problem cannot be resolved through any software.
WinXP I have P4 system. The usual configuration is e.g. 1.2 processor/128 DDR etc, I am facing problems with XP, when it runs, at first, it halts the screen and goes blank for a while but then re-appears and runs smoothly but the display colour shows as if VGA diver is not installed. I have re-installed XP many times but the problem persists. Azhar Khugyani Peshawer
Your problem is exactly what you've identified. WinXP requires a 32 MB VGA Card (Minimum) and at least 256 MB SYSTEM RAM. Both of which you're lacking. Please get a Graphics Accelerator, if you wish to run WinXP on your system.
Saved files in Word do not open Some time back, I selected and copied a page from Web, and tried to paste and save it in MS Word. I usually did this for good and useful material from Web. But this time the pasted text adopted the form of small boxes. I closed and restarted MS Word, it worked for new text. But none of the previous files were found saved in the Word. When I tried to open one, "Convert Files from + a list of files" appeared. I tried all files but could not retrieve the saved text. However, "Recover Text from any File" worked and some part of the saved text appeared. But files in the folder, didn’t open. Kindly guide me what to do? Prof. Mumtaz Ahmad Dera Ghazi Khan
Boxes in word appear when files have become corrupted because of various reasons ranging from Virii to a hard disk about to crash. In your case, please consult a proper technical person for this issue. It could be that you have bad sectors on your system and your disk is about to crash.

Please search for your motherboard on www.intel.com and download the drivers from there.

Cyclic redundancy error What is cyclic redundancy error? Whenever I install games like FEAR, POP3 it gives this error. Arfat Khan ak_hellboy@yahoo.com
A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is a type of hash function used to produce a checksum - a small, fixed number of bits - against a block of data, such as a packet of network traffic or a block of a computer file. The checksum is used to detect errors after transmission or storage. A CRC is computed and appended before transmission or storage, and verified afterwards by the recipient to confirm that no changes occurred on transit. CRCs are popular because they are simple to implement in binary hardware, are easy to analyse mathematically, and are particularly good at detecting common errors caused by noise in transmission channels. If you get a CRC error, that means there is some problem in your file. Please get the CD changed in this case.
