Zone Alarm QUESTION: I have Zone Alarm installed on my computer but because of it, I cannot use Yahoo! Mail as the session keeps timing out. To use Yahoo! Mail I have to shut down Zone Alarm but that leaves me with no firewall. How can I use both simultaneously? Assad aaf73@yahoo.com
EDITOR’S REPLY: Under certain conditions, it is necessary to bypass the WebShield's transparent proxy and set things up manually. This includes the following situations:
1. If you are using Zone Alarm with Privacy Control turned on. The current version of WebShield's transparent proxy is incompatible with Zone Alarm’s Privacy Control features. 2. If you are using Windows 95/98/ME. WebShield's transparent proxy only works under NT-based operating system. Here are the proxy server settings for Internet Explorer when using broadband and/or a local area network (LAN) internet connection:
1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Select Tools and then Internet Options from the main menu. 3. Switch to Connections. 4. Click on the LAN Settings button. 5. Check the option “Use a proxy server for your LAN.” 6. Type “localhost” in the Address field (alternatively, you can enter the IP address 127.0.0.1 which is the same as localhost). 7. Enter “12080” in the Port field. 8. Press OK.
Here are the proxy server settings for Internet Explorer when using a dial-up modem internet connection:

Check the option “Use a proxy server for this connection”. 6. Type “localhost” into the Address field (alternatively, you can enter the IP address 127.0.0.1 which is the same as localhost). 7. Enter “12080” in the Port field. 8. Press OK.
Proxy settings Is there any way to remove proxy settings? I can’t use LimeWire or Kazza to download music just because of the proxy settings used in my hostel. Tell me some way use the internet without proxies. Do they slow down the internet speed? Shahryar Mushtaq shary_mq@hotmail.com
A proxy is a separate server that protects your system from being easily accessible from users on the internet. It is also an excellent tool for monitoring the internet usage of people. Unless your administrator allows you to do so, it is impossible to surf the internet without a proxy server.
Proxy settings do not slow down the internet speed in any way.
Windows installation I have Windows 98 on my pc but now I want to install Windows XP on it. Please tell me how? Also, what can I do if I want to show windows XP by default when I switch on the PC? E. Ali sensational_moment06@yahoo.com
Insert the Win XP CD-ROM in the Win 98 environment and Choose Setup. Choose New Installation (instead of Upgrade) but in Advanced Options, select “I will choose my own partition”. The system files of Win XP will be copied to the hard disk and your computer will restart. When it reboots, you will be given two choices: either a Win 98 or a Win XP installation. Select Win XP and when you get to the screen where it asks which partition you would like to install Win XP in, choose one of the multiple partitions that you have in your hard disk. If you don’t have multiple partitions, then you will require Partition Magic 8.0, a utility that will create them for you. Be sure to run this utility before the XP installation. After you choose the partition, XP will take over automatically and you will have both systems on your PC.
Task Manager I have Windows XP SP2 installed on my PC. When I press "Ctrl + Alt + Delete”, it does not show the Task Manager, and the following message appears: “Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator”. What should I do? Syed Muzamil Karachi
This error is caused by restrictions placed in registry. To enable Task Manager, try any one of these methods:
Option one:
Click Start/Run and type this command exactly as given: “REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f”.
Option two:
Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to: “HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System”. In the right-pane, double-click “DisableTaskMgr” and set its value to 0.
Option three:
Click Start/Run and type “gpedit.msc”. Click OK. Navigate to this path: “User Configuration ==> Administrative Templates ==> System ==> Ctrl + Alt + Delete Options ==> Remove Task Manager”. Double-click the “Remove Task Manager” option.
Set the policy to “Not Configured”.
Dr Watson Debugger Whenever I try to select a wallpaper in the Properties field using the up or down arrow key on the keyboard, the system stops and the following message appears: "Dr Watson Post-mortem Debugger has encountered an error and needs to close”. After that, when I open Task Manager, a “drwtsn.exe” file opens. After cancelling it, the computer becomes normal. What could be the reason and how do I get rid of this? Bilal Qasim bilalqasim@hotmail.com
Dr Watson (Drwtsn32.exe) is installed in your system folder when you set up Windows. The default options are set the first time Dr Watson runs which can be either when a program error occurs or when you start Dr Watson.
When a program error occurs in Windows, the system searches for a program error handler which deals with errors as they arise during the running of a program. If the system does not find a program error handler, it verifies that the program is not currently being debugged. The system then processes unhandled errors by looking for a program error debugger. This is when Dr Watson comes in and given Microsoft’s software, it usually crashes the system. Quite frankly, you don’t need to worry.
