Windows Messenger
QUESTION: When I try to sign into Widows Live Messenger, the system gives me the error code “80004005”. However, when I sign in with any other ID, it works properly. What could be the problem?
Bakhtawar Khan
hero_tipu@hotmail.com

EDITOR’S REPLY: The error “80004005” means that the script could not access your data. The most likely reason is a permission-related problem. To solve this you can either delete your Windows logon username, or delete your Windows Live User Corrupted Files.

The second option is better since it saves hours of copying user documents and then putting them back onto your new Windows user.To do this, go to [your hard drive where window is installed]>Documents and Settings> [your username]>Local Settings>Application Data>Microsoft>Windows Live Contacts>. Delete everything in the folder.

If you cannot see the “Local Settings” Folder then you need to go to Windows Explorer; Tools>Folder Options>View>Hidden Files and Folders>Show hidden files and folders.

Processor speed
My system’s speed is 500MHz and I want to increase it to 700MHz. But before doing so, I want to know if my motherboard can support this speed. I have an Intel processor and an HP technology motherboard. Please tell me how to check my motherboard.
Subhan Mansoor
subhanksr@yahoo.com

Go to www.intel.com and find your motherboard on the site. It will give you all the information you require, including whether the board can be upgraded and to what level.

Svchost.exe
When I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, my task manager shows a program called “svchost.exe” which takes up a lot of memory. What does it do? Will it be okay if I end this program?
Asim Majeed
sumsoft@gmail.com

Svchost.exe is a system process which belongs to Microsoft Windows Operating System. It handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Hidden files
1. Whenever I start my computer the following two messages pop up on the screen:
— “Cannot find the file ‘cmmpu.exe’ (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.”
— “Could not load or run ‘cmmpu.exe’ specified in the WIN.INI file. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the WIN.INI file.”
What is the problem with the system?
2. I hid folders containing important documents. When I wanted to retrieve the information, I could not find the option “show all hidden files” anywhere on my computer. There was a folder option but it contained just one option, “customise this folder”. What can I do?
Qurat-ul-ain Syed
qa_syed@hotmail.com

1. “Cmmpu.exe” is installed alongside C-Media audio card drivers. This process is an MIDI emulator, usually on C-Media on-board audio cards. This means that you will have to reinstall your sound drivers.

2. Double-click on the My Documents folder and go to Tools > Folder Options > View. Scroll Down to Hidden Files and click on “Show Hidden Files.”

P2P software
Can you please tell me which P2P software is the safest?
Humza Aasim Yusuf
humzaay@gmail.com

Technically speaking, none of them are safe. All P2P software are capable of downloading viruses on your PC and most usually have a spyware installed. However, you can try “LimeWire,” or “BitLord” (if you are comfortable with Torrents) since these are safer than others. You can find them after typing the keywords on Google.

Graphics software
1. Which is the latest WWE Wrestling Game that can be played on computer, and not just on PST?
2. Is there a graphic software that can edit images, for instance, make the man in the image wear a hat?
3. I want to do a complete system scan online. Please suggest a website for that.
Muhammad Talal
helper561@hotmail.com

1. To the best of my knowledge, the last wrestling game for PC was the RAW. However, you can search Google or www.gamespot.com for more information.

2. That will be Adobe Photoshop. However, it will not “magically” make the person wear a hat. You will have to develop that.

3. Try http://housecall.trendmicro.com.

Corrupt CDs
I have an Intel P4 and 256MB RAM. My system has no 3-D card and I am using Windows XP with service pack 2. My problem is that when I installed some games and different English learning software on my PC, it gave the following error: “setup.exe is not valid win32 application”. What should I do?
M. Misbah-ul-Haque Faraz
faraz_usindh@yahoo.com

The problem is in your CD and not your computer or OS. Please get the CD exchanged for one that is working properly.

Entry test
I am preparing for the pre-entry test to different medical colleges. Please suggest a few websites from where I may get multiple choice questions that are related to my courses.
Farzeen Akhtar
shahz_princess2006@yahoo.com

Try typing in the subjects of your choice. For example, instead of biology, type “enzymes” in Google.com. This would bring up more relevant material. For MCQs, you can type “enzymes multiple choice” as keywords.
