Question: A few days ago, my WindowsXP got corrupted and I had to format my C drive and re-install WinXP and MS Office 2000 Professional.
My problem is that whenever I try to open my MS Word or MS Excel files, the display file conversion message and the content are displayed in encoded form. How can I fix this problem?

Editor’s reply: Using an NTFS file system could be the cause. However, if you are not using it, then there is a likely chance that your hard drive is about to crash. In either case, I suggest that you seek help from a technician on this.

Gaming speed
I have a P3 with 600MHz processor and 256MB RAM. I also have both WindowsXP and 98 on the system. Can I play GTA Vice City on my system, even though it lacks the recommended speed? Also, if I increase the RAM, will my system run faster?

You can, in all probability, run the game but be careful while doing so. With a slower processor, you will be overloading its abilities and there is always a danger that your processors will crash.
Regarding your second query, increased RAM means better gameplay, because more data can be loaded into the memory. It does not increase the processor speed, however.

Try using “Download Acc-elerator Plus” which you can download from www.download.com. Drag the links directly into the software to download those files.

You should not cheat in online games and if you do you are likely to be banned because you will definitely to be found out. So I would not recommend it.

Blue screen
My computer is a P3 with 3GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 128MB of Video Memory with WindowsXP. I want to play Silent Hunter 3 on it, and although my PC meets the optimal requirements of the game (except for the RAM which is 1024MB), whenever the game loads with single player mode or campaign mode, a blue screen appears and begins to dump my physical memory. How may I solve this problem?

The blue screen of death appears usually when some drivers have conflicted with the OS in some form or memory has caused a failure. In your case, since it is always when the accelerator is invoked that you get this message, I suggest that you get new drivers for your card.
If the trouble persists, get the card checked, especially for compatibility with your motherboard.
Secondly, I suggest that you check whether your memory sticks are seated correctly. Can you or someone you know open up the case and make sure the memory sticks are pushed in firmly?
You may also want to run a test on your memory from one of the many test utilities available.
You could even test it on a friend’s PC and see if you get the same problems. Also, open up your system and see if it needs cleaning from the inside.
