Processor speed
Question: A week ago, I increased my processor speed from 600MHz to 800MHZ. But the Windows still shows it as 600MHZ. Even the Bios shows the same speed. What is the problem?
Ali Salman
ali_salmanin2001@hotmail.com

Editor’s reply: The BIOS is the most accurate judge of the processor speed. If it is still showing 600MHz, then in all probability you have not been given a 800MHz processor.

Urdu fonts
I like visiting websites that are built in Urdu. Sometimes, I want to make use of the material by cutting and pasting. However, the material that I copy from these sites is not in an editable condition. Why is that so?
Muhammad Tufail
tufailmadni@hotmail.com

Your system lacks the Urdu font which the websites use to display the text. Search and find Urdu fonts on the net and install them on your system.

However, an easier way would be to get hold of Urdu 98, Urdu Mahir, Parsenagar or Page Professional and copy the text there.

Game websites
Please suggest a website from where I may learn about the best PC games and read game reviews too.
Abdullah Tariq
abdullahtariq80@yahoo.com

My personal favourites are Yahoo Games http://games.yahoo.com, GameSpot www.gamespot.com and PCGaming Review www.videogamereview.com/. For more websites, type “PC Gaming Reviews” in Google.

Internet speed
I am using 56K modem with WindowsXP. Is there a way to increase my internet’s speed?
Umar Tariq
thecerebral_assasin@hotmail.com

The maximum speed you can get on any modem is between 7 to 8KB per second. The speed of the internet access, however, mostly depends on the quality of the telephone lines, your telephone exchange and the amount of bandwidth that the ISP has provided to its users, and not always on the modem.

Partition Magic
I am using an HP laptop that came with a software called QuickPlay. This stopped the laptop from playing CDs and DVDs without actually starting Windows. I formatted my hard disk and divided it into two partitions: one of 40GB and the other of 16GB. But when I tried to install QuickPlay, a message popped up saying that I need 250MB of non-partitioned space to install it.
Can you please tell me how I may acquire 250MB of non-partitioned space without having to format my entire hard disk?
Kashif Naqvi
kashifnaqvi@hotmail.com

It seems like you missed the part about letting 204MB partition space remain free during installation. Please get the software “Partition Magic 8.0” from your local CD vendor. Install that on your system. When you run it, allocate the space from Partition D and free the 250MB space. This will help you install QP.

Boot failure
Sometimes when I start my system it gives the message, “disk boot failure, insert system disk, and press enter.” What could be the problem?
Waqas Ahmed

The problem could be caused by any of the following possibilities:

1. Boot options are not set properly in CMOS;

2. Non-bootable CD or CD-R is present in the computer, or;

3. All boot devices set are not bootable.

Verify that the boot options within CMOS are set properly. Also verify that no CD or CD-R is in the computer, possibly causing the computer to attempt to boot from that disc.

If the above do not help, then it is likely that your computer is not detecting any devices in the system that are bootable. This is most likely a problem in the hard disk configuration or it could be that the disk is about to crash. In that case, you better consult a technician.

Printer problems
I have an Epson Stylus C43SX printer. The problem is that when my colour cartridge runs out of ink, I am unable to print in black either and the system keeps telling me to install a new colour cartridge. Please tell me what to do.
Farhan-ul-Haq
hawk796@yahoo.com

Please call the vendor and ask him about this problem. If the printer does not support the option of printing in black when the colour printer runs out of ink, then I am afraid there is nothing you can do but get a new colour cartridge.

However, you could check the settings of the printer and the software and see if it supports “black only” printing.

Original WindowsXP
1. From where can I buy the original software of WindowsXP in Karachi? How much will it cost?
2. Where are the updates from Microsoft installed and saved (downloaded)?
Fawad Yousuf
ufffawadyouaretoomuch198@hotmail.com

1. Most PC vendors will be more than happy to provide you with the original Windows XP OS software. The home edition, to the best of my knowledge, costs around Rs6,000, while the Professional version costs about Rs13,000.

2. You can just switch on “Automatic Update” option in “Control Panel-System”. It will download the latest updates and install them automatically.

Virus
There is a Word document named “My Heart” in C:\My Document folder, which McAfee virus scan detected as a virus. When I delete it using the anti-virus it gets deleted momentarily, but returns when I restart the system. What can I do to permanently delete it?
Umair Nazir

For instructions on how to permanently remove the virus, please visit http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hllw.pesin.html.
