Locking drives
Question: I need a program through which I may lock a drive in My Computer. Also, please suggest a software to lock folders.
Ali Zain Kara
alizain@cyber.net.pk

Editor’s reply: For both, I would recommend “Folder Guard 7.1” which you can download from www.folderguard.com or www.download.com. It can protect your hard drive and individual folders too.

Error in CD
1. When I insert the disk B of Generals, a message saying that the program has performed an illegal operation pops up. And then the following message appears:
“Error 1311.Source not found G/Data2.cab.Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.”
“Internal Error 2350”
“Error1603 FATAL”
“Error during Installation”.
2. I have installed NFS PORSCHE Unleashed, but when I click “Race” the loading stops halfway. What is wrong with my system?
Ali
roomitall@yahoo.com

1. Try getting a different CD to Run Generals. Apparently, your version has an error in one of the files because of which the system cannot access it.

2. Your computer is not supporting the game properly. Please check to see that the minimum game requirements are met by the system.

DLL errors
I have a P3 with 128MB RAM. Whenever I install a game in my computer, some of the games do not run and the system says: “The required DLL file is not found.” So what can I do to solve this problem?
M. Daniyal Hasan
daniyal_scorpio@yahoo.com

DLL errors can occur for any number of reasons, from missing or damaged files to hardware problems. However, first try and install DirectX 9c from www.download.com and see if that fixes your problems. If it does not, go to http://www.dlldump.com/ for a list of every imaginable DLL file and see which one can fix your problem.

Website
Please recommend a website that will give me sufficient information on the life and political history of Sheikh Mujeeb-ur-Rehman.
Bint-e-Shibli
smiling24@hotmail.com

You can try http://en. wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh_Mujib_ur_Rehman. But I suggest that you try the local library if you cannot find information on the internet. There are some excellent libraries like the DHA Library in Karachi which have the information that you require.

MSN blues
1. When I connect my modem with the phone line to use the internet, it automatically signs in to an older version of MSN. I am not sure how this happens, since my MSN 7.0 is not set to sign in automatically. And it always shows that “not signed in” status.
2. When I sign in to Orkut, it shows some other page, stating that there is some internal error, powered by Starware search. The rest of the sites I log on to are functioning perfectly.
Khwaja Ali Shahid
kalishahid@hotmail.com

The other messenger is Messenger 4.0 which is always bundled with Outlook Express. To Delete Messenger type “RunDll32 advpack. dll,Launch INFSection %windir%\inf\ msmsgs .inf,BLC”. Remove in run. It will remove the other messenger.

2. You may have a problem with Spyware. Please download Ad-Aware SE or Spybot and do a complete system scan on your PC.

Breaking files
1. From where can I learn about the detailed description of Windows setup files, registry keys and values?
2. How can I break big files of any type into smaller portions, for easy and speedy transmission via email so that the originality of the file is not altered?
Aasim Lateef
aasim989@hotmail.com

1. You can browse through Microsoft’s own collection of documents on windows at http://msdn.microsoft.com.

2. You can break the files up by using Outlook Express’s own Utility. Go to the Accounts, Advanced, and you will find the option “Breakup Files Larger Than...”. Check that and specify the size you would like to transmit in chunks. This utility automatically combines the file at the other end.

Virus
1. Whenever I start my computer I receive the following error message: “Windows cannot find ‘C:\windows\system 32\svohost.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file click the start button, and then click search.” How can I fix this problem?
2. How can I get myself a Gmail account?
Ali Khan
kak_pk@hotmail.com

There is no such file as SVOHost in the Windows System. There is SVC host which manages 32-bit DLLs and other services. SVOHost is most likely a virus or the remains of one.

Type ‘Msconfig’ in run, go to the startup tab. Uncheck any file that you do not understand or which may be a virus. This will solve the problem.

2. Download the Google Desktop Bar from http://desktop.google.com. This will give you an option to create a Gmail account without an invitation.

Browser problems
1. Whenever I open a website through any internet browser, after a few seconds it gives the message that an illegal operation has been performed and Windows will be closed down. What could be the problem?
2. From where can I download Sindhi Inpage for free?
Saahar Karim
saahar_karim@yahoo.com

1. Your system files have become corrupted. Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and download the latest version of IE. Alternatively, you can switch to FireFox at www.firefox.com, which I feel is a better browser than IE.

2. You will find the Inpage at the local CD store. There is no website from where you may download it.
