Accelerator cards question: I am using WindowsXP with a 2GHz processor and 128MB RAM. But whenever I run games like Need for Speed Underground 2, they run very slowly and the graphics are not up to the standard either. Muhammad Sharjeel Chughtai msrk_121@hotmail.com
Editor’s reply: You are facing this problem because such games require special 3D Accelerator Cards like GeForce and Radeon that display the graphics for these games. You will need such an accelerator if you wish to improve your gaming experience.
Boot problem 1- I use a Pentium4 Celeron with 2.04GB hard disk and 128MB RAM. I installed both Win98 and WinXP on it. But after some time Windows 98 started showing some errors, so I removed it. But now whenever I start my PC, it still shows both Win XP and 98 on the system. How can I solve this problem? 2- Whenever I open WinXP, it gets frozen, but when I log off and then log on again it works fine. Bilal Ahmed Temuri temuri_92@hotmail.com
1- I suggest that you edit your Boot.ini file. Ensure that you can see all your hidden files (Open any Folder in XP, Folder Options, View System Files), and then go to the root of the partition on which your Win98 is located (Usually C:\). Here you will notice a file by the name of Boot.ini. Open it in Notepad, where you will see a line ending with \Microsoft Windows. Delete the entire line. But be very careful when you are doing this. If you make any other change accidentally, then your computer will not run. Better make a backup copy of this file on your desktop with another name. After deleting the line, save.
2- One of your software might be causing problems. Try using msconfig (type it in run) and go to the startup tab. Uncheck the applications that you do not understand or want. This will solve the problem.
Changing format I own a Sony Ericsson K300i mobile phone, which has about 6MB of memory and is able to play MP3 songs. However, with just 6MB, I cannot carry more than one or two songs and the phone does not have the option of extendable memory. Is there any format other than MP3, or attachment of additional memory, that can let me carry more songs? Also, the video movies recorded on the phone, when transferred on my PC are of 3GP format. But my Windows media player does not recognize this extension. Please suggest a player that will be able to play these recordings. Plus, suggest a converter that would convert this extension into a more general one, so that sharing these recordings with friends will be easier. Nina Rupani lucky_nina88@hotmail.com
Mp3 format can be compressed to as low at 8kb per second streams, giving you a complete song in less than 500KB. Use rippers like ‘Audio Catalyst’ or ‘Mp3 Encoder’. You can also search for more utilities at www.download.com with keywords ‘Mp3 ripper’.
For the second query, please download QuickTime from www.apple.com. This will run the 3GP format.
Linux OS From where can I download Linux OS that I can install it on my hard disk? M. Anees anees_avis@yahoo.com
You can download Linux from www.linux.com. Do read the ‘New To Linux’ section first at http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/03/09/1727250 since it will help you decide which distribution of Linux is best for you. I recommend Mandrake 9.0. To download this, visit http://distrocenter.linux.com/.
Virus I have recently downloaded version10 of McAfee anti-virus. Now every time I open a file, the anti-virus gets activated and the system tells me that the file is virus-infected. How can I stop this? Hassan Iftikhar buddyspiked@gmail.com
McAfee is preventing you from running a virus-infected file. Please clean the file or delete it totally to prevent damage to your computer.
Word problems Whenever I open a document or create a new document in MS Word 2003, the following message pops up: “This document cannot be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document.” What could be the problem? Rizwan rizzyrex@gmail.com
This is a bug in Office 2003, and to date no proper solution has been suggested. However, you can update your Office 2003, with Service Pack 2, which lists this and fixes this error.
Anti-spyware program 1- Are branded computers better for playing games than unbranded ones? Also, please recommend a good anti-spyware program that comes for free. 2- I have a movie whose CD A is working fine. Its CD B has 2 files named Avseq01 and 02. The first file works fine, but when I play the second in Windows Media Player it keeps on displaying ‘connecting’ and does not proceed any further. After a long time it gives the message that ‘Class not registered’. Please tell me what is causing this error and how can I remove it? M. Moammar sono786_4u@hotmail.com
1- As far as I know, there is absolutely no difference in the performance of branded and unbranded computers for playing games. The only advantage is that branded computers are fully optimized in terms of their hardware, which gives you the best possible speed. Unbranded computers are not so optimized, relatively speaking. However, a good technician can easily rectify that.
Regarding anti-spyware program, my personal favourite is ‘Ad Aware SE’ or ‘SPYBOT’. Both can be downloaded from www.download.com.
2- Your Quartz.dll, which is DirectX DLL may not be registered correctly.
In order to register it, click on Start > Run... > and type regsvr32 quartz.dll. In the end, you should receive a message saying that your file has been successfully installed.
