PDF FILES
QUESTION: I have scanned four image files with the extension “PDF,” but their size is around 6.31MB. I have also tried scanning them at the lowest possible DPI, but the size is still 2.50MB, which means I can’t send them through email. How can I compress those files to the smallest possible size?

I want to download emails from my Hotmail account to Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. How can I do that?

Abrar Ajram
Karachi

EDITOR’S REPLY: When you scan your images, be sure to select a DPI of 72 and an image resolution of 800x600 for the document. Also, save in a JPEG format and not any other. This will reduce the file sizes to less than 300KB (depending on your scanning). If you still need to compress them further, then open the image files in Adobe and go to Files>Save As. Select the lowest value as 1, under Image Options. This will convert the file to a very low size.

For Hotmail on Outlook Express:
1. Go to Tools>Accounts>Mail Tab>Add Mail. Select your Incoming Mail Server as HTTP, and in Providers, select MSN. Click on Next and in User Name, type your account's email address. Then, put your password in the password field, and you're all set to receive emails on Outlook.

MODEM PROBLEMS
I have a modem, HSP56MR (AMR), installed on my motherboard. However, Windows XP does not support it. I have tried downloading the latest drivers, but that hasn’t helped. Sometimes, XP's built-in drivers work and I am able to use it, but that does not happen very often. Please help.

If the generic 56K modem doesn’t work on your system, then I can only suggest that you get a proper hardware modem. They’re not that expensive and since they are compatible with Win XP, they will save you a lot of trouble. You can, however, try contacting your dealer and ask him about the problem. Perhaps he might be able to help.

SOUND PROBLEM
The sound on my computer was working fine previously but now, something has happened to it. There is no response from the speakers and the microphone. All related devices, codecs and drivers in “sound and audio devices” as well as “Sound, Video & Game Controllers” in “Device Manager” are also working properly. The sound hardware test wizard does not give a positive result and so, there is no sound in both Windows 98 and Windows XP. My motherboard, GA-7ZX, has built-in sound. What should I do?

You have not mentioned whether you have checked your speakers. It’s possible that your speakers conked out. Try using a friend’s speaker system for a test to find out if your speakers are causing the problem. Also, please install a sound card on your PC (borrow one from a friend) and see if that works. If it does, then you'll have to get your motherboard tested.

GAMING HARDWARE
What kind of hardware should I install on my computer to ensure the smooth running of all new games? My range is Rs30,000.

Within 30K, I cannot recommend the best 3D Accelerator out there, which is an essential component of smooth game play. However, I suggest you get a fast 3GHz processor with at least

512RAM, or even 1GB. You’ll have to increase your budget for the 3D Accelerator. The one available within your range is GeForce 5800 Ultra and that's not going help you too much. If you want to go all out on gaming, I recommend GeForce’s 6600 series or Radeon’s 9800 series. These graphics cards are the best ones available on the market right now, but are very expensive.

If you only wish to play games on your PC, I suggest you get a PlayStation2 instead, because no matter how souped up your PC is, some games will still not run perfectly and others won’t run at all. It’s better to get the actual console in this case. It’s also more economical.

WINDOWS INSTALLER
I have a Windows Installer problem as follows: "Installer is not configured correctly. Uninstall it, then reinstall it." When I install or uninstall any application and when I access Ms Word, Excel or any MS Office application, the following message appears: “Preparing for Windows Installer.” Then, it stops. How can I fix this problem?

It seems like you have either deleted a few system files or have corrupted them severely. I suggest you repair your Windows. Just run setup without formatting your hard disk in the same Windows directory and Windows will reinstall and restore all files.

UNSENT EMAILS
I keep getting messages of “failed delivery” of emails that I did not send to addresses I am not familiar with. I am sure there is a virus in my laptop, but repeated virus scans have shown that my computer is free of viruses. What can be the problem and what can I do about it?

Fuzail Siddiqui

I myself receive many emails from senders whom I have never heard of in my life. The problem lies not in your system, but in the receiver’s computer, which has been infected with viruses. The best way to resolve the problem is to just delete the messages. Hopefully, in time the recipients will clean out their systems and the problem will be resolved. Until then, nothing can be done.

‘READ ERROR’
Recently, I bought Medal of Honour, Pacific Assault on four CDs. I am facing problems in one of the files from CD number two, that is, it is a corrupt file and the system gives a “Read Error” message. The other CDs are working fine. I only need one file from the second CD. Do you know of any website, which can provide this file for free?

You can try playing the demo versions of online games, which can be downloaded from sites, such as and and also, the official sites. However, there is no website, which lets users download popular PC games for free. Those that do are liable to “copyright infringements” and can be subjected to criminal prosecution. For your problems, you can ask your CD vendor to change the CD for you. They easily do that when a game CD doesn’t work.
