Question: Whenever I press the space bar between words in MS-Word, or when I’m chatting, the words are erased. Please help. Babar Ali Khan Karachi
Editor’s reply: Please check your keyboard settings in the Control Panel. Check the properties and make sure you have selected the standard 101/101 key US keyboard. If this doesn’t work, then please get your keyboard checked.
PC freeze
My PC freezes whenever I connect to the internet. Nothing works and so, I am forced to restart my computer. I have reinstalled Windows 98 and MSN Messenger several times, and have even scanned my PC for viruses. Please tell me what to do. Sarah Karachi
Your problem lies either in the modem, or the software running the modem, which means the drivers. I suggest you change the PCI slot of your modem (the white slot in which your modem is installed) and reinstall the drivers. If that doesn’t work, try updating your modem drivers from the vendor’s website. If this doesn’t work either, change your modem.
Jet Audio Player
My Jet Audio Player is not working properly. I have tried reinstalling it many times but it has not worked. How can I fix it? Shees Khoso Hyderabad
You can try installing the latest version of Jet Audio. Please go to www.download.com and download it from there. You can also try other software, like WinAmp (www.winamp.com), which is just as good, if not better.
EXE file
My Explorer’s EXE file is corrupt, which is a problem while booting. If I cancel scanning and restart the computer, Windows becomes stable and runs properly. The only way around this would be, of course, to repair the corrupt files. I have two CD-ROM drives, but the one from which I installed Windows does not work anymore. So when Windows asks for the installation CD from the same drive, I am unable to provide it. Is there any way by which I can change the location of the installation CD in Windows? Osama Javed playing_runescape@yahoo.com
You will have to rewire the computer cables. If you can’t do it yourself, then get someone to help you with it. After you open the casing, please unscrew and remove the CD-ROM that doesn’t work anymore from your computer and keep it aside.
Remove the other CD-ROM and examine its back. You’ll see four jumpers there (jumpers are the wire-like things at the back). You will have to convert this into a primary drive. For this, you will have to attach a pin to one of the jumpers.
Examine your broken CD-ROM and you’ll see a pin covering one of the jumpers. Take that pin out and put it on the same jumper of your other CD-ROM. Then, place the drive back on the peripheral cable (the cable you’re using to connect the CD-ROMs) of the broken drive. You are all set to use your other drive.
Sasser worm
I am using Windows 2000 on a network. However, the Sasser worm infected one of the systems in the network and also my PC. How can I remove it?
There is a network printer on one computer (Epson LQ 570). When I send a print command from Win 2000 or XP, it stops after making a few strange noises. However, on Win 98 there is no such problem. The antivirus software, Panda, shows that the corrupt file is “ prntsrv.dll”, but I am unable to delete it. Please help. Zeeshan im_zeeshoo@yahoo.com
Please go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html and download the free Ms.Blast removal file. Follow the instructions on how to remove the virus. In the meantime, you can disable shutdown by the following steps:
1. Go to Start - Run.
2. Type in CMD and press Enter.
3. Type in the following command and press Enter: “SHUTDOWN -A.” This will terminate shutdown. However, in most cases the system may be too unstable to recover and may need to be rebooted anyway. Also, be sure to install a good firewall, because it helps in containing the worm.
4. Then, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2354406c-c5b6-44ac-9532-3de40f69c074&displaylang=en and download the patch which will prevent this from happening again.
You should also download the file for the Sasser worm, in case Ms.Blast is not detected on your system. This is available at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.removal.tool.html. Follow the instructions provided. For your printer, you can either try reinstalling the printer driver, or you can reinstall XP.
System speed
My computer has become very slow and it often restarts by itself. Is it infected by a virus? Taimoor Ali Khanzada taimoor_khanzada@hotmail.com
If your computer has slowed down recently, then you may have Malware on your system or, yes, even viruses. I suggest you download Ad-Aware SE from and after updating it, run a full system scan on your PC, as well as a full scan with an antivirus software. If that doesn’t work, then visit http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm and follow the instructions given there. This will increase the speed by as much as 50 per cent.
Flash problem
Whenever I open a website, which has Flash bases, virtual tours and digital videos, I get the following message: “IE encountered an error and will be closed.” Then a window opens saying that Macromedia does not have a solution for this problem. It either asks to “disable “ or “upgrade” the Flash object, which is an add-on for IE. Updating it downloads the same version. Disabling prevents the opening of too many URLs. What should I do? A. Ghani Tak agtak@yahoo.com
Your problem lies with Internet Explorer. I recommend repairing IE by reinstalling Windows on your current operating system(s). That will resolve the problem.
You can also try downloading FireFox from http://www.mozilla.org. It’s much more stable than IE and doesn’t cause as many problems.
