Computer speed

Question: I have a DELL Pentium II processor with 64MB of RAM and 2.1GB of hard disk. Please tell me what I should do to increase my computer’s speed.

Waqar Ahmed Shaikh
Hyderabad

Editor’s reply: Unfortunately, aside from upgrading your system, I cannot recommend anything. However, you can ensure that, to boot faster, you don’t have any applications in your Startup folder. Also, please remove all icons from your desktop and create partitions on your hard disk.

Move all your data to the second drive, leaving more space for the Windows Virtual Memory to manage your files.

Registry error

Whenever I switch on my computer, I receive the following message: “Window Registry Checker encountered an error accessing the registry window.” It then reports the registry and restarts the computer. There is also an option of an “OK” button. When I press it, I lose all of my VGA and sound card data. I have reinstalled Windows many times, along with formatting the hard disk, but the problem persists. Please help.

If you have reinstalled Windows and the problem is recurring, then I suggest you ask a proper technician to look at it. The problem could either be with your hard disk, or the motherboard.

Compatibility

I HAve installed some games and software on my PC, but whenever I run them, it says: “XXXX.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.” How can I fix this?

Asad Ahmed

Your software has compatibility issues with your PC. Please ensure that the minimum requirements of those games and software are being met. Secondly, please go to and run a complete system scan.

Also, download AdAware SE from and run a complete system scan. Your problem might be caused by SpamWare. If all else fails, reinstall Windows.

Orkut cookie

I am using Win 98 with Internet Explorer 5. A few days ago, I could easily sign in to Orkut, but now, whenever I try to sign in, the following message appears: “please enable cookies in your browser to login.” I have enabled cookies in Internet Explorer but the problem persists. Please tell me what to do.

Please ensure that you’re not using any firewalls or spam blockers, which might be causing this problem. If so, please disable them. If that is not the case, please go to and download the latest version of IE.

PS2 games

What is the system requirement for operating PS2 games on my computer?

Kiko Win
Islamabad

I recommend at least 512MB of RAM and a 128MB VGA Graphics Accelerator (a better one would be a 256MB card) to properly play PS2 games. You will also require a DVD-ROM. After this, try one of the following emulators: (a) PCSX2 (http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/ps2/pcsx2.html); (b) PS2emu (http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/ps2/ps2emu.html); (c) NeutrinoSX2 (http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/ps2/neutrinosx2.html_).

Please note that not all PS2 games will run on your computer.

Viruses

My system, which has Win98, was infected with W32.Chir.B@mm(html) and W32.Chir.B@mm viruses, due to which all my word files were corrupted. Now, when I open the infected files, it shows gibberish and several page breaks. Please tell me how can I fix these infected files? Are there any tools available for such problems?

Muhammad Ali

Go to and run the cleaning tool there. That will clean most of your viruses from the system. Then, run the Win98 setup again and reinstall all your system files to ensure that your hard drive is cleaned. Also, install McAfee 8.0 or 9.0 and after updating, run a complete system scan. This will ensure that the virus is removed from all your files and hopefully, will recover the data as well. Then, install “Ontrack EZ Recovery Pro. 6.0.” It may recover the old files.

Registry optimizers

1. Are registry optimizers (such as Windows Registry Repair Pro) really necessary? Which ones do you recommend?

2. Can you please tell me which would be the best graphics card to use (something that is cheap and works well)? I have checked many sites but am unable to make up my mind.

3. I want to increase my computer’s speed (P3, 128MB RAM, Windows XP). I have anti-spyware and anti-adware programs, along with registry optimizers, but I have not noticed a significant difference in my computer speed. Will increasing the RAM size make a difference?

When you get your PC, it usually runs very fast. However, as you keep installing software and use your computer each day, it gets bogged down. The problem lies in your computer’s “registry,” which is left full of clutter. Uninstalling software isn’t usually enough to wipe out these entries. Not only does this clutter slow down your PC, it also leads to crashes and frustrating errors. This is where registry optimizers come into play. They erase all entries in the registry, which are not linked anymore or are invalid.

These software are good to use. However, most of them have been known to cause problems, since they often delete the required registry entries. I personally don’t use or recommend optimizers. However, the ones you might want to take a look at, are PAL Registry Cleaner and Registry Cleaner .

The Geforce 4 line of graphics cards, especially the Fx5200 Ultra, is quite reliable. The Fx5200 Ultra performs well and is low on cost as well. Some other cards include the Fx5900 Ultra Geforce and Radeon’s line of cards.

The software that you mentioned increase the speed minimally. Increasing your RAM, however, to 512MB will definitely make a difference.
