Bootcfg command QUESTION: I was formatting my C:/ drive, which had Windows XP OS. I had Windows 2000 Pro on my other partition. While formatting C:/, I forgot to make Windows 2000 as my default OS. Now, I can’t access Win2000. I changed the boot.ini file, but it isn’t working. There’s also a boot.ini file in “msconfig”, but I can’t seem to change that. Please help.

Sajjad Khan

ANSWER: Please use the WinXP bootcfg command. The bootcfg command is a Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console command that manipulates the boot.ini file.

This command has a function that can scan your hard disks for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP installations, and then add them to an existing boot.ini file. The function can also rebuild a new boot.ini file, if it does not exist. With the bootcfg command, additional boot.ini file parameters can be added to existing or new entries.

To use the bootcfg command, start recovery console with the Windows XP CD-ROM, and then click on Recovery Console.

The bootcfg command has the following uses:

1. The bootcfg/default command sets the default operating system option in the boot menu.

2. The bootcfg/add command scans the computer for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP (if it is dual booting) installations, and then displays the results. From this location, you can add an installation to the boot menu.

You may receive a message, similar to this: “Scanning all disks for Windows installations. Please wait, since this may take a while...” and then “Total Identified Windows Installs: 2.” Select installation to add: (select a number). Enter Load Identifier: (custom description for an OS loading from the boot menu). Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect).

This process adds a new entry in the boot menu. When you add an installation, the bootcfg command also makes it the default operating system boot entry.

Select your Win2k partition, and then add it to the boot.ini file. That will enable you to run Win2k again.

Music file formats

What IS the difference between “audio” songs and “MP3” songs? Also, could you give me the names of a few websites, from where I can download audio (Hollywood, Bollywood, Lollywood) songs?

Audio songs refer, in general, to any song in any format. There are many formats available in which you can encode your music. Some of the popular ones are: AAC, MP3, CDA (the audio CDs you listen to), WAV WMA. Each format has its own compression rate and quality of audio.

MP3 is one of the many popular formats and stands for MPEG Layer 3 (Motion Pictures Expert Group Layer 3). This was developed in Germany in 1991 by the Fraunhofer Institute. It uses perceptual audio coding to compress CD-quality sound by a factor of up to 12, while providing almost the same fidelity.

Some websites from where you can download songs are: and . You can also search for MP3s on Google, or use P2P software, like Grokster, BitTorrent or Kazaa.

Thumbnail viewing

1. I cannot seem to view thumbnails of JPGs and GIFs, despite configuring options in the Folders menu and using the Association option. However, I can view thumbnails of Bitmap files. Previously, My icons also had this problem, but somehow, that got resolved by itself.

2. Whenever I click on “MyDocuments”, with the “View as Web Page” option activated, it gives an “illegal operation “ message and my active desktop goes wonky. It does not happen with the “View as Web Page” option deactivated, but that is only to some extent. What should I do?

Repairing your OS is the best thing to do. Reboot from a Win98 Bootable CD and reinstall on top of your current operating system, without formatting the drive. After this, check for viruses and spam on your system.

Multiple queries

1. I am using Gmail with Outlook Express. I have activated the POP3 service from Gmail’s account, with the exact configuration of Gmail’s POP3 server, but I can’t receive or send emails through Outlook. Previously it was working fine with Norton Internet Security 2005, but now it gives the following error: “Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E.” I have also tried Gmail’s Auto Configuration software, but nothing seems to work.

2. Where is the file is saved, when downloading is in progress via Download Accelerator Plus 7.4? Is it possible to save the file and reuse it, when DAP is reinstalled (once Windows is installed after formatting the hard drive)? If so, how can we do this? Finally, which Download Accelerator provides good GUI and speed?

1. Your problem is Norton AntiVirus. Outlook Express has problems with antivirus software, when “email scanning” is activated. Norton has a “Scan All Outgoing/Incoming” mail option, which is not very compatible with Gmail’s SSL feature.

In fact, it has been known to cause a lot of conflicts with the accounts. Norton corrupts the actual Outlook Express account when it “scans” Gmail. So, simply disabling or uninstalling Norton will not “fix” the problem — the corrupted account has to be deleted and rebuilt from scratch.

To resolve this, first, disable the “Scan all Outgoing and Incoming mail” from Norton’s Internet Security Feature. Second, recreate Gmail’s settings, that is, log in to your account and recreate Gmail settings for POP3.

Third, open Outlook Express and delete the Gmail account you’ve set up there. Exit Outlook Express, reopen it and then recreate the Gmail account in OE, ensuring that you use “465” for SMTP (outgoing) and “995” for POP (incoming), in Advanced settings. Also, make sure you have the SSL connection checked. This should hopefully fix the problem.

2. I believe DAP uses the TEMP directory in the Windows folder. I don’t think the files can be reused, but you can try contacting the technical staff at and find out more.

3. I myself use DAP (Download Accelerator Plus), but you can also try Fresh Download or GetRight. They’re available at .
