Messenger trouble

QUESTION: My MSN Messenger does not sign in and gives the following message: “you must install a newer version in order to continue.” When I click on “no,” it does not sign in and when I click on “yes,” it starts downloading Messenger 6.2, but the download is never completed. I tried reinstalling 6.2 from a CD and have also installed Messenger 7.0 but the problem persists.

EDITOR’S REPLY: Download MSN Messenger from and then install it on your system. However if you have Win98, you will not be able to use it on your system. You need WinXP for that.

SVCHost problem

My SVCHost file often goes up to 100 per cent, when I am surfing on the internet. Please help.

SVCHost files are responsible for controlling your networking and internet applications. This behaviour is perfectly normal.

Creating websites

Can you please tell me how to make a website or tell me about a website where I can make my own web page? Also, some of my music files are protected and when I download their licences, it says the licence has already been downloaded. Please tell me what to do.
Saad Rehman

Try using Frontpage or DreamWeaver. They are both good software for publishing. To upload your website, you can register on Yahoo! and use their WebTransfer facility. You can also use BulletProof FTP, CuteFTP, etc. To learn more about developing websites, please visit .

As for your music files, nothing can be done in this case. However, you can try contacting the web administrator and tell him about the problem.

Spyware

My computer has been infected with a worm that sets my IE homepage to “Search the Web.” I have used Spyboot Search and destroy, Lavasoft Adware, Registry Mechanic 4.0, Pal Spyware Remover, Spyware Guard, Spyware Doctor, McAfee 8 Professional (updated) and some other anti-spyware software, but the problem still persists. Please advise.

Go to Add/Remove and uninstall the “180 Search Assistant” from the list of applications. Then, go to Run, type “MsConfig” and at the startup tab, uncheck all references to 180 Search and any that you might not recognize. That will uninstall the bar. Also, ensure that you are using a firewall like ZoneAlarm, available at .

Drive compression

Recently, while compressing a large amount of data, the computer screen got blurry and then, my system froze. When I rebooted the system, it did not work and now, sometimes on rebooting, it starts beeping. I have tried replacing the RAM, but it hasn’t helped. Please advise.

Drive compression is usually a bad idea. System files will be compressed and become inaccessible to Windows. Try logging in through the “Safe Mode” (Press F8 at boot). If that doesn’t work, you will have to reinstall Windows.

Uploading music files

I created an account on freeservers.com and have uploaded HTML, GIF, JPEG files successfully, but I am unable to upload music files. Please tell me how upload them.

MP3 files violate copyright laws, which is why webhosting sites will not let you upload them. I recommend getting your own domain and hosting, if you wish to upload music files.

Saving emails

I want to format my computer’s C:/ drive, but before formatting, I want to save all my emails and addresses in Outlook to some other partition of the hard disk. What should I do?
Aftab Hussain Jafferi
Badin

To save addresses: open the address book. Go to File>Export Address Book There are three ways to export it. I prefer the text file (CSV) format. Enter the name of the file, select the fields you want to save and your addresses will be safe. To Import, go to File>Import Address Book and import it.

To save messages: copy the Outlook Express folder where your files are located at a different partition. If you have only one user account on WinXP, the folder will be found under: Drive_Name:\Documents and Settings\ User_Name\Local Settings\ Application Data\ Identities\{Lots Of Numbers Here}\ Microsoft\. Just copy that. In Win98, It is usually found under the Applications Data on C:\ ,or If you have multiple identities, then it will be found under: \\Windows\ Profiles\ Identities\Microsoft. Make sure you locate the right user.
