MSN is one of the most popular chat tools today. Let us take a quick look at the latest MSN Messenger, with a few tips to make chatting on this software more interesting.
For starters, here is a list of non-default emoticons you can use in MSN:
(xx) for Xbox, (pl) for plate, (yn) for crossed fingers, (st) for rain, (ci) for cigarette and (%) for handcuffs. Default emoticons are (tu) for turtle, (h5) for clap and (brb) for be right back. If your contact has used an emoticon that you don’t have, simply right-click on it and select “Add.” You have now added another emoticon to your list. In fact, you can download 28,000 free emoticons from Mess.be
A new feature in MSN 7 (beta) is “Winks” — an animation played at your contact’s end. This can be blocked using a patch available online (see “Disable Winks” in our URL section).
If you have removed or disabled MSN or Windows Messenger, Outlook Express may start slowly and the system log gives “…{FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541} did not register with DCOM…” error. To solve this problem, go to Start > Run. Type “regedit.” Open the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}\InProcServer32. Right-click on the right-hand side pane, and delete “Value Data.” Do the same with: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}\LocalServer32
If MSN is not connecting or has been blocked by your LAN administrator, you can use web access, to go through one of the many web-based MSN sites that provide ripped-off functionality of MSN Messenger. Basic functionality is required, that is, chat. And that is exactly what you get through web MSNs. Try the official MSN Web Messenger or eMessenger, MSN2Go, WBMSN, msnMessenger2Go!, i-mode, etc.
Do you want to create your own MSN? Well, don’t fret — there’s plenty for you to do.
You can download dotMSN library, create chat bots, develop web-based MSN sites and many more custom utilities. To use this library, you must be acquainted with Microsoft’s .Net object-oriented paradigm. You will be at ease using this C# library and can either view its documentation online or download compiled Windows help as well. Go to MSN Messenger Beta to get your hands on the latest pre-release MSN 7. Combine sounds with animations as you play “Winks,” jolt the chat window of your buddy with a “Nudge,” start your chat with the status set beforehand, let everyone know what your are listening to, update and view MSN Spaces, etc.
There’s so much more to IMs than mere typing, so use them to enhance your chatting experience.
