Editor's reply: Here are the answers to your questions:
1. Shutdown problems in Windows 98 Second Edition can be caused by any of the following reasons:
(a) The Fast Shutdown registry key is enabled.
(b) The Exit Windows sound file is damaged.
(c) A program or Terminate-and-Stay-Resident (TSR) program does not close properly.
(d) An incompatible or damaged device driver is loaded.
(e) There is an incompatible Advanced Power Management (APM) or Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) setting.
(f) There is an incompatible Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) configuration setting.
(g) The computer contains incorrectly configured or damaged hardware.
(h) There is a video adapter that is not assigned an IRQ in real mode.
Here are some ways to resolve the problem(s):
(a) IRQ Steering — This option allows several PCI devices to share the same Interrupt Request Line (IRQ). If the BIOS is not fully compliant, this option may prevent your computer from shutting down properly, even if two or more devices are not sharing an IRQ. To disable PCI bus IRQ Steering, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
- On the Device Manager tab, click System Devices.
- Double-click PCI Bus, and then click to clear the Use IRQ Steering check box on the IRQ Steering tab.
- Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.
- After you restart the computer, try to shut down your computer again. If your computer shuts down successfully, you may need to change the BIOS configuration or you may need a BIOS update. For information about how to do so, contact your BIOS manufacturer.
(b) Resume on Ring and LAN — If you have this option switched on, disabling the “Resume on Ring and LAN” feature in the computer’s BIOS may solve some shutdown-related issues.
(c) Plug and Play BIOS — In some cases, the BIOS and Windows may not be communicating properly with the computer hardware during shutdown. You can configure Windows 98 Second Edition to ignore the presence of a Plug and Play BIOS and communicate directly with the hardware.
(d) BIOS setting — To configure Windows to avoid using Plug and Play BIOS:
- Restart your computer, and press and hold CTRL until you see Windows 98 Startup menu.
- Choose Command Prompt Only.
- Type the following line at the command prompt: cd \windows\system
- Rename the Bios.vxd file to Bios.old.
- Restart your computer.
- After the computer restarts, attempt to shut down Windows. If the computer shuts down correctly, the system BIOS is likely to be contributing to shutdown problems.
(e) NVRAM/ESCD — There are specific settings for how BIOS and Windows interact during the startup and shutdown processes. To check this, disable the NVRAM/ESCD updates feature to determine if doing so resolves the shutdown problem. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
- On the Device Manager tab, double-click System Devices.
- Click Plug and Play BIOS, and then click to select the Disable NVRAM / ESCD updates check box on the Settings tab.
- Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.
- After restarting your system, try shutting it down once again.
(f) Fast Shutdown Registry Key is Enabled — The Microsoft System Configuration utility includes an option to disable Fast Shutdown. If this option is not set in Windows 98 Second Edition, your computer may reboot instead of shutting down. To resolve this, change the FastReboot data value from 1 to 0 in the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Shutdown
(g) Antivirus program — If you have an antivirus program that is configured to scan your floppy disk drive, your computer may stop responding when it shuts down. Also:
1. If you have installed new hardware or software on your computer, un-install it and check to see if your shut down problem is resolved. If it is, contact the vendor.
2. Start your computer in Safe mode and then shut down. If your computer does not shut down properly, there may be a compatibility issue between Windows 98 and your computer's BIOS.
3. Disable some device drivers. Some of the most common device drivers that may cause problems are device drivers for sound cards, video adapters and network adapters. Disable any devices in the following categories: (a) display adapters; (b) floppy disk controllers; (c) hard disk controllers; (d) keyboard; (e) mouse; (f) network adapters; (g) PCMCIA socket; (h) ports; (i) SCSI controllers; (j) Sound, video and game controllers
To disable device drivers:
(a) Right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the Device Manager tab.
(b) Double-click a device type, for example, Sound, Video, or Game Controllers.
(c) Click one of the listed devices and then click Properties.
(d) Click to select the “Disable In This Hardware Profile” check box.
(e) Click OK and then restart your computer.
2. You can use Adobe Premiere, but there's no Media player which will help you record songs. However, you might try “VCD Cutter,” if you need certain clips of movie files.
