I have a game CD and have installed it on my PC but the game doesn’t run without the CD and a “Disk or network error” occurs. I have also copied the whole CD and have run the setup from my PC but the problems remains. Is there any way that I can play the game without the CD?

Editor’s reply: Try using Virtual CD 6.0. It copies your CDs and DVDs to the hard drive of your PC using highly efficient data compression techniques. Virtual CDs are then run in virtual CD drives which are automatically set up in Windows and have all functions and features of the original CD. It’s just like having the CD there. You can find it at

1. Older versions of Hotmail could tell you when you had been blocked. The newer versions however (to the best of my knowledge) do not have any third party applications developed that can do so.
2. It is hard to believe that Microsoft is supporting its Picture It! software now. That’s why you will not be able to update your system.
3. It is suggested that you try Adobe Premiere. It’s easy to use and very powerful for video editing.
Worms and viruses
What are worms and viruses? Are they some sort of program?
Hussain Shabbir
Karachi
Editor’s reply: Worms and viruses are software programs capable of replicating themselves and usually harm files or other programs on the computer. They are loaded on to your computer without your knowledge and run without your instructions.
Most viruses can also replicate themselves and spread to other computers. Viruses can be transmitted by downloading programming from other sites or are present on a diskette.
The source of the file you’re downloading or a diskette you’ve received is often unaware of the virus. The virus lies dormant until circumstances cause its code to be executed by the computer.
Dual OS installation
I have the following two questions:
1. Can I make half of my RAM memory to work for my 3D card?
2. How can I have dual operating systems, that is, WindowsXP along with my existing Windows 98 OS?
Abdullah Umair
Lahore
Editor’s reply: The answers to your questions are given below in the same order as asked:
1. VGA RAM (the kind on Graphic Accelerators) is very different from normal RAM. What you’re suggesting is not possible. Rest assured that if you use any graphic application at all (games, etc), your Windows RAM is fully utilized for the purpose. That is the case even if you have a graphics card. In that case, they both work together.
2. Run Windows XP installation from within Windows98 environment. Select New Installation (instead of Upgrade) and install on to a different partition. That will ensure that you get a choice between both Windows.
PC freezes
When I start my PC, it halts during booting and only the Windows wallpaper appears. If I start it in safe mode then a massage appears that “system.ini not found.”
I have also tried to re-install Windows but my bootable CD fails to detect the system. I have tried many different bootable CDs but every time I get the same result. Please help.

Editor’s reply: Make sure that your BIOS is checking your CD ROM first for a Boot Device. Enter your Windows BIOS (Either Del or F2). Find your Boot Device Priority (it’s under different sections in different Motherboards). Ensure that the First Boot Device is set to CD ROM. Usually you can change the setting by pressing Enter, Page Up or Page Down. Exit after saving changes.
Now your BIOS will look for a bootable CD first before going to the hard disk. Re-install Windows from it because it seems you have damaged your system files. If, however, the above is not the case, then please get your system checked by a PC technician.
Installation problem
I have installed Encarta reference library 2005 which consists of 3.26GB data CDs. Often when I open any picture or movie the system hangs. I have a Dell CPU dual processor, with a memory of 256MB. Why does my PC freeze?
Anwar Ahmed Siddiqui
Lahore
Editor’s reply: Try installing the program on a single processor. If it works fine, then the problem might be the dual processors that you’re running. Applications programmed for single processors usually crash on dual ones. There is no solution for this.
However, if the program crashes on the single PC also, then it is suggested you get another CD and re-install it.
