BYTEBACK:

Windows logo designing
What does it mean when our system prompts an error message: “software used while installing for hardware has not passed Windows logo testing in Windows XP?”
Kamran Ashraf

Lahore

Editor’s reply: One of the biggest problems that has plagued the Windows operating system in the past was the installation of a software driver that was not compatible with the version of Windows that was being used.

The compatibility issue comes into play when you attempt to install a driver that was not designed for the version of Windows that is being used.

The difference between Windows XP and any previous versions of Windows is that it will warn you when you are about to potentially destabilize the entire system with what is referred to as an ‘unsigned driver’.

An unsigned driver is one that has not been specifically certified by Microsoft to work with Windows XP. This does not mean that unsigned drivers will always cause a problem, but it does mean that you could be taking a chance by installing it.

Microsoft has often been blamed for creating an unstable operation system, but much of the blame should be laid at the feet of the user who installs a program that is mismatched for the version of Windows that is in use.

As a general rule of thumb, always check any software program to see which versions of Windows it supports before attempting to install it.

If you are running Windows XP and the CD that you are about to install does not specifically mention support for Windows XP, you should check with the software manufacturer’s website for an updated version.

Another tip that will help you to avoid problems is to always check the manufacturer’s website for the very latest version of any driver or installation program to ensure the highest level of compatibility, even if you have a Windows XP certified CD.

This will very likely be the first thing that a tech support person will tell you to do in the event of a problem, so doing it before calling for help will reduce the amount of time that you will spend on the phone with ‘cauliflower ear’.

If your system seems to be very unstable, you can also check to see how many unsigned drivers are currently installed to see if a recent installation coincides with the instability.

To check File Signature Verification, click on Start, Run then type ‘sigverif’ and follow the instructions on the screen.

Game cards
Can you tell me the websites for information on graphic card costs and their models? Also tell me which graphic cards would be suitable for the latest games.

Editor’s reply: 1. you might want to visit www.cnet.com and search there for graphics cards. You will also get an estimate of the price. However, pricing in Karachi for these cards varies from vendor to vendor, so you will have to ask your own vendor about the local price. It may be higher or far lower.

2. Any nVidea’s or Radeon’s card will be good. You can read more about the cards that fit your budget on CNET only. However for the top of the line card, Geforce 6600 Series or Radeon’s 9800 card are suggested.

Virus and drivers
I have following questions:

1. Do I need an antivirus software in WindowsXP? Which will be the best antivirus for Windows XP?

2. I have an Intel celeron motherboard with a Motorola modem but when I install Windows XP it does not detect and install my motherboard drivers itself while my Hp printer and video driver is installed during Windows installation. Please tell me what to do.

Editor’s reply: Here are the answers to your questions:

1. You will need an antivirus software, no matter which Windows OS you use. For Windows XP, I would recommend you use McAfee 8.0 or PC Cillin 2003.

2. There should be a modem drivers CD and a motherboard CD along with your motherboard and modem. XP might not have those drivers pre-installed, as is the case with many third party drivers, which is why it cannot install them directly. You might want to try installing the drivers by downloading from the vendor’s sites, in this case www.intel.com and www.motorola.com.

Keylogger
Please answer my questions:

a. Is there any good antivirus software which can record all activity on the computer and internet.

b. What’s the price of 128MB RAM nowadays?

c. There is no temporary internet folder in my Windows folder. How can I get it?

Editor’s reply: Here are the answers:

1. Antivirus software don’t monitor computers. What you need is a software like Looxee 5.0.14 (http://www.looxee.com/) which is completely invisible and records everything from screenshots, keystrokes, and websites visited, to chat and email. The program also includes advanced compression and direct Webcam recording. or Wintective Keylogger and Screen Capture 2.2 (http://wintective.terkud.com/). Wintective is a stealthy monitoring spyware which allows you to secretly track all activities of computer users and automatically deliver logs to you via email. Wintective can monitor all areas of the system such as emails sent, websites visited, file operations, every keystroke, username and password, online chat conversation (ICQ, MSN, AIM, Yahoo messenger, Instant Messaging Systems). You have the option of running the program in invisible mode, so the user is unaware that he/she is being monitored. Others include Spy-Keylogger 1.0 and Ghost Logger.
