THIS is in reference to Dr. Inam-e-Khuda’s article: “Bacteria resistance:the challenges ahead”, that appeared in Sci-tech World on Sept 11. The doctor states that plague was given the name Black Death because it wiped out nearly one-third of the population of Europe. The fact is that plague is called the Black Death because it causes the tips of the victim’s fingers and toes to turn black due to gangrene.

Editor’s reply: XBox has a far superior technology than PS2 and the games that MS has developed are leading the market, technologically. However, for gaming library it’s PS2 that rules at present. However MS is fast changing that. Actually, you can’t go wrong with either. Editor’s reply: For now, you can only send MMS messages from one MMS enabled phone to another MMS enabled phone and this service is only available on Ufone. Even internationally, you have to be subscribed to certain service providers, and the service is primarily restricted to USA and UK. Hopefully, as the MMS becomes more common, free sites will open up that serve our country. However, try finding sites by typing the keywords : ‘free MMS send’ in Google.

What is an SMTP server? I have a software which requires a SMTP server and port, what should I write there, and tell me the SMTPs of Hotmail and Yahoo.

Editor’s reply: SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is a method used to send e-mail on the Internet. SMTP is a set of rules regarding the interaction between a program sending e-mail and a program receiving e-mail. It is used with both POP3 and IMAP4. A SMTP server does not mean an actual server. It means your software is asking for the SMTP of the ISP you’re connected to. You should ask your ISP to help you fill in this information, but usually it’s smtp.yourisp.com.pk and on port 25. It is mail.yahoo.com for Yahoo and mail.hotmail.com for Hotmail. However, you have to be a paying subscriber to use these SMTP servers.
PS2 emulator
I am unable to play PS2 games on my computer. I have the software that you recommended for playing PS2 games that is pcsx2.

Editor’s reply: The way to run PS2 games on a PC is to load the emulator and then use that to open the DVD containing the PS2 game. If the game refuses to work, then that game may contain different coding than what the emulator uses. No emulator runs all the games. I suggest that you try the newer versions of PCSX2 or try Bleem or VGS to work with your PS2 Games. Make sure you have the latest versions of each.
Virus bombardment
1. How can I get rid of Dumarin.H and Dumarin.G viruses? The cleaner software isn’t detecting it and this is a brandnew PC, and what is a free, reliable and updated anti-virus software that can counter all these trojans etc? 2. Is the 105B Philips lightframe 2 monitor compatible with 32 BIT setings of an Nvidia Geforce FX 5500? What are maximum settings? 3. My windows is flooded with viruses and I have got a dull software, Trend Micro Officescan that detects, but does not clean these files. How can I delete it, it requires a serial number. Tell me a site for this. 4. Are the Geforce FX series better than the MX series?

Editor’s reply: 1 & 3. I suggest you install Trend Micro PC Cillin 2003 or McAfee 8.0. After doing that, update the software and run a full system scan. This will clear your problem. You can also visit http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run an online scan, which will delete these worms too.
2. For the Philips Monitor, I would suggest that you ask the dealer or the company these questions. However, if taking a guess, I would say it is.
4. FX series is the better series of Geforce Cards. MX are the lowest cards, meant for those people who want the bare basics of 3D acceleration. FX Series however, contains advanced features like Pixel Shaders, etc. You can find more information about these cards from www.cnet.com.
Slow booting
My P4 boots very slowly, even when I am not running any startup applications.

Editor’s reply: It could be that the hardware is not optimized totally for your system (e.g. the Motherboard settings maybe slower than the speed of your RAM). For this I would suggest you contact your vendor. However, if the computer has gotten slow recently, and wasn’t always this slow, than you may have malware on your system or Viruses. So I suggest you download Ad-Aware SE from www.download.com and after updating it, run a full system scan on your pc, as well as a full scan with an anti-virus software.
If you still don’t see the required performance, then visit http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and after this http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm and follow the instructions on how to optimize XP’s system settings. This will increase speeds by as much as 50%.
