Research on natural resources launched


THE Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar, in collaboration with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), is conducting a research on natural resource management in Mansehra district.

The research titled “Study of people and resource dynamics in the mountainous watersheds of Pakistani Hindukush-Himalayas” is a regional project being implemented in four of the ICIMOD member countries. They are China, Nepal, India and Pakistan.

In Pakistan, the target area of the project is Hilkot watershed located in district Mansehra, where it is involved in natural resource management and gender and equity issues through participation of various communities.

To highlight the project activities, a women’s day programme has been organized in Hilkot on Sept 4. The women activists would be awarded certificates on this occasion.

The participants from various communities of the watersheds would set up stalls of handicrafts, sewing and embroidery, boutiques, fruit and vegetable preservation, pickle, jam, squashes, drawings, local fruits and vegetables.

Aerospace institute


The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) of the federal government has approved a Rs195 million project of establishing Institute of Avionics and Aerospace (IAA) at Air University, Islamabad.

The CDWP has approved the Higher Education Commission’s initiated IAA project in a bid to meet the needs of a number of defence projects including the production of the JF-17 advance fighter aircraft indigenously, HEC chairman Dr Attaur Rehman said here on Thursday during an official meeting.

According to HEC spokesperson Dr Rashid Mateen, the CDWP had approved the project in its recently held meeting. He said the government would provide Rs195 million to the Air University for the completion of the project.

Keeping in view the importance and the immediate requirement of the country in the field of avionics, establishment of an institute of avionics and aerospace was the need of the hour, he said. The institute will help solve the research and development problems of private and public sector institutions, he observed.

The project will be helpful in coordination of multidisciplinary research and development efforts being undertaken at Suparco, Civil Aviation Authority, Air Weapons Complex, Pakistan Engineering Council, Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.

The institute, when established, would undertake high quality research education in the areas of mechanical design, thermo-fluids, structures, navigation, guidance and control, signal processing and air data sensor, etc, the spokesperson observed.

Wireless broadband chip


Intel on Sept 7 disclosed key technical details of its upcoming wireless broadband chip for WiMAX products, which will enable long-distance, high-speed wireless internet access for homes and businesses.

The wireless component, code named “Rosedale,” is expected to be the first “system-on-a-chip” design for cost-effective customer premise equipment that supports IEEE 802.16-2004.

IEEE 802.16-2004, also known as WiMAX, is an emerging wireless standard that promises to provide broadband connectivity at DSL speeds across long distances.

Research council


The Department Development Working Party (DDWP) of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved Rs35 million for establishing a Microelectronic Research Council (MERC) at the University of the Punjab.

The HEC spokesperson, Dr. Rashid Mateen, on Wednesday said MERC would be responsible for running MPhil in Microelectronics Engineering and Semiconductor Physics (MESP).

The research work carried out during the MESP course would be of international standard and could be extended to PhD studies and research.

A close collaboration, he said, would be established with the Microelectronic Research Centre, Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University, UK, and with Centre of Excellence in Solid State Physics, Punjab University, Lahore.

The Karachi Stock Exchange has deployed Intel Itanium 2 processor-based Unisys ES 7000 Aries servers to power comprehensive data analyses for stock trading and to increase its overall operating efficiencies.

The new platform will run on Oracle 9i RAC database and Microsoft Windows 2003 OS, powered by a total of 24 Itanium 2 processors with 6Mb L3 cache. — Sci-tech World Report
