Question authority

It is a general practice of the people that they agree the principles discovered by their predecessors. In this way, the real knowledge becomes elusive and resultantly we are deprived of the same.

Once people used to believe that the earth was flat because apparently our senses agree the view but it was the personality of the Galileo, a great astronomer, who first time in the known history of the world reached the conclusion that the earth was round not the flat one. Now if the astronomer would have succumbed to the accepted wisdom vis-à-vis the flatness of the earth, how could he came up with the startling fact telling the roundness of the earth. The credit goes to this very way of thinking in which one questions the already established beliefs. More and more we question the accepted wisdom, more and more we come up with the more refined principles of the nature. Of course, these principles(accepted wisdom) help us in understanding the world.

The history is replete with the incidents in which the great men penetrated into the intricacies of the accepted wisdom and were led to the new principles based on the debris of the old ones.

Another example is also from the life of the same person- Galileo. It was the general belief of the then people that massive objects fall more rapidly as compared to the lighter ones. Because our common sense speaks the same. But Galileo falsified that notion of the people when he made a plethora of experiments leading to the new principle that all the objects fall with the same rate.

Not very long ago when scientists believed that there exist four fundamental forces in nature. Three scientists —Dr Abdussalam is one of them— challenged it and they proved that one force is redundant. It was simply a derivative of an other force. In this way, now we have three fundamental forces of nature. Still, the scientists are striving hard to come up with a unified theory which would solely characterize all the three fundamental forces — a long cherished vision of Einstein who failed to materialize it.

Some people may say that we should not tamper the accepted wisdom. It does not augur well. It will unleash the wrath of some deity. They have actually an orthodox mindset which resists any change in the accepted wisdom. Actually, they are suffering the intellectual lethargy.

After this discussion, it can be safely said that we should question everything. Of course, this questioning on every thing will lead us to the more refined and in some cases absolutely new principles of nature. The people who question direct the course of real knowledge.

Removing Sasser worm

I think my WindowsMe is infected with Sasser virus. Please tell me how to remove it?

Arif Sheikh

Rawalpindi

Editor’s reply: The W32.Sasser family of worms can run on (but not infect) Windows95/98/Me computers. Although these operating systems cannot be infected, they can still be used to infect vulnerable systems that they are able to connect to. In this case, the worm will waste a lot of resources so that programs cannot run properly, including the removal tool. (On Windows 95/98/Me computers, the tool should be run in Safe mode).

The execution of the worm causes LSASS.exe to crash on some systems. The result of this is that the system may undergo a reboot. The fixtool can be successfully run only after the system has completed the reboot.

To check if your Windows is infected with this virus visit and click the button given on the page, this will throughly check your machine online.

If you find your system infected with the worm, download the FxSasser.exe file from: . Save the file to a convenient location, such as your downloads folder or the Windows desktop, or removable media known to be uninfected. Close all the running programs before running the tool. If you are using cable LAN for internet access, disconnect your machine from it. Also if the “System Restore” is enabled on your PC, make sure you disable it.

Now run the downloaded patch. When the tool has finished running, you will see a message indicating whether W32.Sasser infected the computer. In the case of a removal of the worm, the program will display the results.

After all this, visit to download Microsoft’s patch for Sasser (A-E) Worm Removal Tool (KB841720). Running this tool will completely purge your system from all variants of this worm.
