SCIENTIFIC instruments designer and manufacturer Cairn Research is responsible for producing quality instrumentation for fast, sensitive optical measurements for use by international bio-scientists in laboratories using fluorescent indicators.
These fast and flexible photomultiplier-based fluorescence systems enable researchers to monitor cellular ion concentration in living tissue such as ratiometric calcium measurements, fixed-slide high-resolution fluorescence/bright imaging, multiple-dye studio, 3D deconvolution, flash photolysis, luminescence, simultaneous electrophysiology and cell-length measurement.
UK-based Cairn Research was set up in 1985 by Dr Martin Thomas who had previously combined his interests in research and commerce by accepting an offer to join an industrial research laboratory. Dr Martin’s industrial experiences led him to believe that a small company with a “can-do” philosophy could compete effectively with much larger organisations. From cancer research to studying how the human muscle functions, Faversham-based Cairn Research’s high-tech equipment is being used by international universities and researchers from North America, Japan, Australia, Europe as well as the UK. The forthcoming expansion of the European Union has led to Warsaw University contacting Cairn regarding supplying equipment for future research work.
The company’s customer base is primarily prestigious researchers with demanding scientific goals and their input has encouraged the firm’s expansion into experimentally related areas, such as electrophysiology, with the company’s Optopatch patch clamp amplifier becoming increasingly popular.
Cairn has a very active research and development programme and is assisted in this by the use of professional development software for specialist design work. The company has workstations for Vutrax for electronic design and component layout; Zemax for optical design and development; and SolidEdge for 3D modelling and drafting. To complement this, Cairn has in-house mechanical engineering facilities that are used extensively for both research and development and custom designed projects.
In addition to manufacturing its own proprietary research equipment Cairn Research is very experienced in providing complete integrated systems based around the company’s hardware and high quality components from other suppliers. — LPS/Dawn feature
