Every time I click on my dial-up account, I get this error message: “Windows encountered an error in the system registry.” On restarting the system, it doesn’t show the created dial-up connection and I have to create it again. Another problem is that on clicking any link in the Internet Explorer, I get this error mesage, “Scripts are usually safe”. And it functions only after I click OK, which is very irritating. What should I do about these?

Editor’s reply: Have you tried to format your system and reinstall windows. If you have done that, then your hard disk might be getting bad sectors or corrupted for which you’ll have to get a new hard disk.
You may also try www.pcprivacysoftware.com/registry_rescue.html and download the (free) software. This will help you diagnose the problems you have in your registry.
Regarding your second problem, just disable scripts in IE by going to Options > Advanced > Disable script debugging.

IP address
What is IP address and how it is created? Also tell me if it is possible to find other person’s IP?
Amjad Karachi
Editor’s reply: In technical terms, an IP is a 32-bit address used to identify a node on an IP internet. Each node on the IP internetwork must be assigned a unique IP address, which is made up of the network ID, plus a unique host ID. This address is typically represented with the decimal value of each octet, such as 192.168.7.27.
In layman language, IP is like the address of your home. Much as in the same way, You tell someone who wants to reach you, the address of your home, the computer sends your IP address out to other computers to tell them where to send the data that you requested. For instance, a website IPs are static (not changing) or dynamic (changing) that is when you connect to an ISP. Each has it’s own function which you can read up on from any book on networking or www.techrepublic.com.
To find your IP address when you’re online, type ipconfig in WinXP in Dos mode. For Win98, use the netstat command.
Motherboard and GFX
Which Windows run best on Pentium 4 motherboard. Also tell me Which AGP card is suitable for games such as NFS Underground, Doom3 and Unreal Tournament 2004?
Nauman Mubarak Karachi
Editor’s reply: On a Pentium 4 machine, any Window would jazz, especially if the system includes 256MB RAM. However, WinXP would be preferable because of its stable behaviour and relatively better features and security options. For gaming, it depends what your budget is. If you are low on budget, you should opt for Geforce 5200 or 5500FX card, available in the range of Rs5000. But if you can afford higher end cards then the Radeon 9800 is the best available deal to go for.
Parity check error
My system fails to function because of some Memory Parity Error. What should I do?
Nauman Afzal Karachi
Editor’s reply: Parity checking is used to detect memory corruption between the time that data is written to memory and the time that it is read back. Parity errors are often a signal that something is working incorrectly in the system. This is commonly a problem with the memory itself, but can be caused by many other sorts of hardware problems as well. If you are or were running with parity checking disabled in the BIOS.
If you are trying to run with ECC enabled on a motherboard that supports both parity and ECC, change the ECC/parity BIOS setting to straight parity and try to reboot. If the parity error goes away, and returns when ECC is re-enabled, the chances are high that you have false parity memory in your PC. The only good solution is to replace the memory.
On a new PC, it is possible that you have an actual hardware failure. If the parity error address remains the same or is in the same vicinity each time it is encountered, this implies a failure of the memory itself. Check for resource conflicts, particularly if you have added any hardware.
