In 1965, Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, stated a law according to which, “the computational power and storage capacity of computer gets double after every 18 months.” This law holds true since 1960 and it seems that it will remain true in the coming years as well. As with every passing day there is improvement in the computers. At present, computers and telecommunications are already giving us access to large amounts of information this is increasing our brainpower, just as steam engines increased our muscle power. As computers become more powerful they will grow more intelligent and there seems no reason why machines should not become more intelligent than people in the future. Computers will start to design and build other computers. They will then be able to create, just as life evolves. There will then be two forms of life. Many thousands of years in the future there might be competition for power between computers and life. Then question is: who will win? Computers certainly have many advantages over life. They can process large amounts of information quickly be switched off for years, then start to work perfectly when they are switched back on (very handy for travelling over stellar distances) be made very small, and control tiny machines work together in networks to solve big problems. Furthermore, electronics is much simpler than life’s chemistry and does not need liquid water. Unlike animals, which rely on plants to turn sunlight into chemical energy, semiconductors (the material that computers are made from) can turn sunlight directly into electricity. When you compare computers to people the advantages are even more obvious. Computers do not have the instincts to fight, which people seem to have. It takes only a few seconds to load a program into a computer but years to educate a human. When computers get out of date their information can be passed to new computers, but when people get old and die all their knowledge is lost. For all these reasons many people believe that computers will be more successful and important than life many thousands of years in the future. Many scientists expect computers, not people, to colonize the other planets and explore the galaxy. Life will be left behind on Earth, as a treasured relic of where computers came from. However, it is possible that computers and life might merge to make a new, even more powerful form of intelligent being. Ayesha Roohi Karachi
This is the reply to the letter “Hotmail: yet another facelift” by Saba Inam Qureshi (Sci-tech World: Jan 03). In her letter, she states that for composing new message we have to go to Mail and then to select New Message. But there is an option for us to activate the old tabs (Home, Inbox, Compose & Contacts). We can do this by going to Options —> Hotmail Navigation —> check on “Change tabs to Home, Inbox, Compose, Calendar (when available) and Contacts” and then press OK. You will get back old tabs which were in the previous hotmail interface. Fahad fahadlion74@hotmail.com
When I run GTA 3 game on my PC, it fails to run and says that it requires at least 12Mb of video memory. How can I upgrade video memory? Zohaib Karachi Editor’s reply: Simply put, a video card relies on its memory to draw a picture. Different cards offer different amounts of this precious memory. Extreme low-end cards now often have only 2MB, while very high-end cards have as much as 256MB of memory or more. The standard SVGA card for the run-of-the-mill task is is 32MB. However, the common misconception is that the more, the better. While this is somewhat true, it is different than expected. More video memory doesn’t speed up the video system on the card. It only jazz up graphics display on the screen by enhancing colours resolution. In your case, GTA requires at least 12MB of VGA (video graphics accelerator) to run. That means that you’re using an old system that lacks the required specifications to run GTA. So you can either choose to upgrade your system, or at least buy a 32MB graphics accelerator card. This card once plugged in will boost your memory to 32MB and your game will run.
