Hotmail: yet another facelift?

In the first week of December with my semester exams starting the next day, I convinced myself to take a five-minute break from my UML book to write a mail to my brother. By the end of the five minutes I was still trying to figure out how to reach the Compose page in my Hotmail account. Something was terribly wrong with interface.

After more than two years Microsoft has slipped in another version of Hotmail. A sleek, streamlined look, a bit too blue but that is pretty much inline with XP, office 2003.

It has its plus points but altogether it is a bit confusing and less user friendly and not to mention far more than a few bugs. When you login you go to the home page which shows you the mails you have received from your contacts but does not tell you the number of new mails you’ve got or the total number of mails in the inbox.

From a pull-down menu on the Mail page (new name for Inbox) you can select new message to write an email. The pull-down menu does not close until you click somewhere out side that menu.

Really the old press tabs were a lot better than these drop down menus. I am still confused for what the Low importance and high importance buttons on the new mail page would do. Another problem with the design is that you can not open the compose page in the new window. Same is with the received messages; it only opened in a new window once for me. I think Microsoft is still working on it. The manage folder option is also removed from the Home page you have to click the Mail tab every time you want to navigate your folders.

Another new “feature” I dislike is the look it self. I suppose I’ll get over that. But, really, the old look was just fine. And, because of this new look, I can no longer hit delete at the bottom of the list of emails. This means that I now have to scroll thru all my emails, click the ones I want to delete, then scroll back to the top to delete them. I think I’ll be do a massive inbox cleanout pretty here soon because of this annoyance.

Overall small fonts are used and the most in use buttons do not stand out, u have to look for them. The options page is very neatly designed in a very manageable way.

The most amazing is the improved spam filtering; my spam has reduced from 20+ to just 6-7 mails per day. Well done Microsoft for that one.

All in all the update is not getting much approval but still hotmail is worth especially when you consider it is a free service!

Repairing IE 6

My Internet Explorer 6 has developed a weird problem. Two of its tabs: “General” and “Programs” in browser’s Internet Options are no longer there. Is there anyway to get them back without reinstalling Windows? I tried reinstalling IE6 but it didn’t work.

Wasiq Ali

Editor’s reply: You can first try to repair it by going to Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs Properties and selecting Internet Explorer 6 from the software list and click Add/Remove, this will bring up a window with options to remove, repair, and restore to previous settings. Choose repair option first and see if it works for you. If it doesn’t try using restore option. If none of the two mentioned above works, choose to remove IE, and then reinstall it from Windows CD. If all these fail then just reinstall the OS.

Graphics in C++

In which programming language the Sega games are developed? And how can I initialize and use more than 16 colours for Turbo C++ 3.0 applications in VGA mode?

Ajmal Nazir

Editor’s reply: Earlier, most Sega games used to be developed in C or C++ using the Allegro Class Libraries. However, times have changed. Now many games are being developed in J2ME (Java2 Micro Edition) for handhelds. They are also being made using “Code Warrior.”

Still Assembly is the most common language that is used for the purpose.

For more information visit: , and

Regarding your second question, you might try the latest graphic and system libraries or use the more updated version of Turbo C++ which in all probability would support a higher palette.
