From main frames to handhelds

By Mazhar Hussain Samo

IN the recent years, there has been an enormous technological advancement in the field of computing devices which are now going mobile. Let alone running word processors, spreadsheets, and organizing software, most handhelds today are capable of running operating systems such as Windows CE, Windows Mobile and Symbian.

These hi-tech gadgets are grdually invading our lives. The day is not far when we will be all-dependent on these devices to perform our routine work, such as checking office documents, controlling home appliances, availing medical services, getting reservations done. Today handhelds are available in all sizes, designs and colours with amazing GUIs and the most powerful of features and capabilities.

Lately, a new innovation includes a complete RDBMS for handheld devices and mobile phones with the footprint of just 1MB, imagine just 1MB!

This advancement is made by Upright Database Technology of Uppsala, Sweden, and called Mimer SQL Mobile. It now enables developers to create and deploy a complete database application for handheld devices that can transfer application to other devices using Microsoft Active Sync.

Mimer SQL Mobile database is specifically designed and optimized for mobile devices, keeping in view the extremely limited resources. The software is compatible with both client and server depending on your need and environment.

In other words your HHD can access and become part of your network (LAN, WAN, IR, GSM, 3G) as client or clients can access your HDD as server.

It also conforms to almost all international standards (SQL 92, PSM, XA Standard) required for any RDBMS. It has support for CLOB, BLOB and multi-byte character (Unicode 4.0) including support for Urdu and Arabic.

With highly efficient compression algorithm it can save memory up to 60 per cent, which makes it as the best option for any database using such a resource limited platform. Also it offers DB backup , import and export functionalities to safe guard your precious data.

Another good feature of this database is its self tuning capability without too many memory parameter settings which are usually a headache for any DBA. This self maintenance capability eventually eliminates the requirement for hiring extra skilled professional, reducing operating and maintenance cost.

At the moment it is only available to iPaq and Pocket PC platforms, but soon it will be available on Symbian for mobile devices by companies such as Nokia, Erricson, Samsung and Motorola.
