Editing boot.ini file

How can I remove the dual boot option which comes when the computer starts. Although I formatted the drive containing WinXP, the option still exists. Please tell me how can I get rid of WinXP option?

AMMARA ARSHAD

Editor replies: You require to make some changes in the boot.ini file which defines parametres for system startup. You must have been using dual operating system option and in your case the boot.ini file resides in C drive. To access boot.ini file first enable the “show hidden files and folders” by going to tools> Folder option> view> clicking show hidden files radio button. If you go to root partition that is C, all your hidden files will be visible to you. Trace the boot.ini file and open it in notepad and remove the line which defines parametres for Windows XP.

Multiple problems

I have three queries:

1. I have a PIII 1.13Ghz, 256MB RAM,GeForce 2mx 64MB 3D Card and Win Xp in my System I have recently installed Enter the Matrix game which is on 4 CDs. After successful installation when I try to play the game, an error: “insert Marix Play Disk” appears. There is no crack in all four cds! Can this problem be fixed?

2. How can I run Scan disk in WinXP? And even when I restart my computer directly the scan disk does not run. Why?

3. How can I run the games which only run on Win98 not WinXP?

Editor replies: Your questions are answered below:

1. You will find the crack file in the fourth CD with the file name “Matrix.exe.” Copy this file and paste it in the Enter the Matrix folder on your hard disk. However, this crack too is bugged, and crashes upon loading “The Truck” level. But you can download a new crack from in order to flawlessly play the game. The game also has problems with third-party refresh rate programs on WinXP systems. So make sure that you dont have anything like the HZtool or ReForce installed on your PC.

2. WinXP has a tool called “check disk” which has replaced scan disk. You can either type “chkdsk” on command prompt or the run dialogue, or right click on the hard drive icons and go to properties>tools > error-checking. This will initiate chkdsk.

3. Almost all games designed for Win98 run also run on WinXP. If you are having some problems fix your problem hunt for related patches on the either www.fileplanet.com or the game’s own website.

Proxy servers

What are proxy servers?

OMI KHAN

Editor replies: Proxy server is a system that sits between the client such as your web browser and the real server. Such server mainly serves two purposes: performing some of the tasks of the server itself therefore improving the network performance, and filter invalid requests, such as to prevent access to certain websites. So basically one of the reason for using proxy server may be for security or to speed up processes. In most organizations, it works as a buffer between an internal network of an organization and the internet as part of a security system to protect the organization’s network for external intrusion.

Graphics card problem

I bought a GForce 4MX graphics card which doesn’t include Pixel Shading. Does Ati Radeon 9800 pro 256MB have support for it?

Secondly, after installing WinXP my Duron 1.2GHz has gone really slow, why?

FAROOQ

Editor replies: The GeForce 4 MX series turns out to be a bad choice for gamers all over because of its fixed function structure, that is, no Pixel Shader support. The Radeon 9800 Pro, on the other hand, is one of the fastest cards available and supports Dx 9.0++. Its Pixel Shaders can now process an infinite length of Pixel Shader commands in just one pass. It is due to the advance hardware technology known as the F-buffer. The Radeon 9800 Pro will cost you around Rs30,000, so make sure that you also check out the equally priced and slightly more powerful Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 256 MB. Regarding your second query, most probably the problem is RAM-related. Augment it and you will experience its wonders.

Low-cost graphics card

Which reasonable graphics card is compatible with most games?

DAREDEVIL

Editor replies: You would most probably get a GF2MX 400/200 card for about Rs2500 from a no-name manufacturer. But it is suggested that you should go for a respectable brand considering the growing game market. Radeon 9100 128MB 3D card for around Rs6000 will definitely be a worthy buy. It is an excellent graphic card for its price and provides excellent pixel shader 1.4 support with enough raw speed to run the current and future games at respectable speeds.

CD conundrum

MY CD-Rom has stopped playing CDs. Why?

Editor replies: You haven’t mentioned the problem explicitly whether you are facing problem on hardware level or software. If the CD-Rom is not reading the data then perhaps there is some problem with the CD that you are using or the lens. However, on the software level, the problem could range from corrupt sound card driver to the program that you are using to play the music. In the former case you need to reinstall your sound driver, while in the latter, installing Windows Media Player 9 could solve the problem.
