BYTEBACK

Mail problems
I AM facing the following problems:

1. I use Outlook Express. How can I block senders?

2. How can I empty deleted items folder? I receive an error that the server can’t understand the request.

3. I receive a lot of junk mail. How can I avoid them.

4. Does Outlook Express support Yahoo email addresses?

5. My Internet Explorer cannot open any mail sites. What’s the problem?
ALI MURTAZA

Editor replies: The answers in order that you asked:

1. There is no blocking option in Outlook Express, though it exists in Office Outlook. However, you can use Message Rules (Message>Create Rule From Message and then insert the text that you wish) to divert the messages that you receive from unwelcome people directly into the Deleted Items folder.

2. To delete the folder, just select all the messages in the box and delete. It’s easier if you turn Automatic Deletion on. Go to Tools>Options>Maintenance; and then click empty the Deleted Items folder. This will clear out the messages as soon as Outlook shuts down.

3. See 1 above.

4. Both Outlook Express and Office Outlook support MSN’s Hotmail. If you want to get Yahoo! mail too, you have to become a paid customer.

5. Problems can range from a simple Proxy configuration to errors in system files.

Uploading problem
I can’t find a free web server that allows me to upload a 10MB file. I have developed an 8MB game but can’t find any server which could upload it. I tried to upload it on Tripod and Angelfire, but both deleted my username as I had “violated” the terms of agreement.

Editor replies: You won’t find any site that lets you store your files directly. However, you can develop a single webpage and link the file via HTML links. This will let you or anyone else download your file and not violate terms of agreements. You can also promote your game and let others improve on the design.

You can also send a request to the File Servers online like Tucows, which let you host your games, or ask a local ISP to do it for you. They might comply, specially if you’re a regular user.

You can also try . It’s a part of the CNET network and allows users to upload files.

Colour problems
My system has an ASUS motherboard with an Intel 810 chipset. It has a 4MB built-in graphic card but shows only up to 24-bit colours. I had another system and it had a 1MB VGA card and that showed up to 32-bits. I have downloaded its drivers from the ASUS website and have installed them but it still does not show better picture quality colour. What should I do?
ANOOQ MUZAFFAR

Editor replies: The chip design of the Intel 810 series doesn’t allow desktop depth to increase further than 24 bits. The RAMDAC on the motherboard is responsible for this as it is not fast enough to generate 32-bit colours. In fact the 810 chipset forces all 3D games to run on 16-bit colours no matter what their specifications.

XP ATX issues
I have WinXP and Win98 installed on my machine. Strangely, WinXP doesn’t shut down automatically and restarts instead. However, Windows98 gets turned off normally. I have formatted and reinstalled WinXP several times but I still face the same problem.

Editor replies: This is a known problem associated with WinXP installations. Your BIOS is not updated and does not support the ACPI functions of WinXP. Update your BIOS by going to the manufacturer’s website and downloading it. If you are not an experience computer user, ask a professional to do it.

VXD blues
As I switch on my PC, I get a Windows protection error as the machine initializes the VKD driver. After a restart, the problem vanishes. Do I need a full reinstallation to overcome this problem?
KHAWAR ATIQUE
Karachi

Editor replies: The Windows Protection Error usually occurs due to driver or hardware conflicts, specially when a new software replaces OS files. It may also happen when the changes to the Windows System have damaged the system. We suggest that you check which new software/hardware you have installed recently and then uninstall it or reinstall the drivers.

Driver demons
My computer does not show a disconnection message when my telephone line gets disconnected from my ISP. What should I do?
DR GULZAR MOHAMMAD
gulzar56@hotmail.com

Editor replies: Incompatible modem drivers may cause this problem. So re-install your modem’s drivers. If you don’t have the drivers, download them from the vendor’s website. Before you go on the hunt make sure you know your brand and model.

IE error
When I open a website my browser (IE 5.0) gives me an error, “Your current security settings prohibits running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result the page can not be displayed correctly.” But after I press “Ok” button, it opens. How can I remove this error?
SAYAM JABBAR

Editor replies: ActiveX is Microsoft’s set of technologies that allows software components to interact with one another in a networked environment, regardless of the language in which the components were created. When you generally see that page error, it means that some of the programming was buggy or maybe the ActiveX component was demanding a slightly higher security authorization than was granted by your Browser.

However, I have never seen this error to cause me any problems and it’s nothing to do with your system. It’s safe. Upgrade to IE 6.0 and you won’t see this error at all.
