WHEN I run Win98 setup it starts fine but after scandisk a black screen appears prompting me to restart the machine. Why? Besides, I have lost my motherboard CD which had all the drivers. How can I get these drivers.

Editor replies: It is likely that there is some kind of hard drive problem. Try reformatting your drive and then running setup. If that doesn’t work, get your hardware checked.
Secondly, go to the vendor sites; for instance, in case of Intel motherboard, search for your drivers on .
Multiple OS
I have installed dual operating system, WinME and WinXP, on my P-III having 40GB hard disk. Can I also install Linux Mandrake 9 or any other previous versions of Linux or do I have to remove any existing operating system?
MUSHU
Editor replies: You can easily manage up to four operating systems on your machine, depending on the number of partitions. You don’t have to delete any of the exisiting systems. If you don’t have more than three partitions, you can create one specifically for Linux by using Partition Magic 8 (or 7). Also create a 512Mb of swap space. Run the Mandrake CD, And you’re set to go. If you are a new user of Linux, make sure you read the howtos of Linux, before you begin installation.

Editor replies: For Yahoo you have to set your POP and SMTP server as . However, you won’t be allowed access to the service since it’s only for users with subscription based service with Yahoo. You’ll have to use the Online Mail account. Try using . They offer Pop and SMTP service for free on signing up.

Unsolicited emails
MY email address seems to have reached a whole lot of spam perpetrators. I get a lot of emails from them. When I access given URL for removal, it turns out to be invalid. Removal requests through email cannot be processed either. Please advise as to what I should do.

Editor replies: There is currently no service that can really get rid of this trash. You’re most probably using Hotmail that’s where most of the spam comes too. If you get such emails on your local email client then there is a solution. Get hold of anti-spam programs such as the Spam Killer, etc, that filter out the spam.
For web-based accounts, most offer the option to get mail only from restricted people, and the rest gets filtered. You can enable this feature on your Yahoo or Hotmail account. And as a thumb rule, never answer a spam. It will only open doors to many more unsolicited sources.
Slow processing
I have dual OS, Windows 98 and Windows XP. My Windows XP is giving me some problems. It used to work so well but the internet explorer makes the whole PC go slow. When the page loads, it does not respond. Also, my MSN Messenger gets disconnected frequently. Please help.
I want to have PLUS! suite on WinXP, which requires 16MB of RAM. I have tried to increase my memory to 16MB but it doesn’t seem to go beyond 8MB. Why?
Do bad-sectors affect the speed of PC?
SUHAIB JALEES AHMED, Karachi
Editor replies: There could be three main reasons for these problems:
Your Win98 system is getting slower because of lesser available space as a lot of space is used by multiple operating systems. Viruses may also be playing havoc with your system; they definitely cause the speed to go down. Perhaps you are using a poor cable internet service which is causing MSN to disconnect and IE to not opening the pages. Try to use a better service.
It is also likely that some virus have corrupted your core system files. Check your machine with any updated antivirus program. It should fix the problem, but if it doesn’t then just reinstall your OS.
Your computer doesn’t have a 32MB VGA card, the minimum required to run WinXP. Your processor would have gone berserk trying to render all those effects that XP uses. Windows XP would in any case make Celeron go slow. In order to use WinXP with Plus suite you have to upgrade your machine.
External CD drive
I have an external CD drive in my PCs, but when I restart my system, the CD icon disappears.

Editor replies: Your problem is related to the drivers of the CD ROM. You can try these to solve this problem:
— First see if all the wires are firmly attached to the system. If any of them is loose or not attached, put them back in. Then re start the computer. This will ensure that the computer redetects the hardware.
— Try Add/New hardware feature in the Control Panel and go for Auto-detection of your device
— Reinstall the drivers that came with the CDROM.
— If all this fails, try to hook up the device to another computer and see if it works there. If it doesn’t, then you have a problem with the CD ROM itself.
