Static IP
What is static IP? What is the purpose of having it?

Editor replies: You are assigned a new IP address each time you connect to your ISP using dial up account. In case of static IP, which you may purchase from the same or any other ISP, you get the convenience of retaining the same IP address throughout.
The only reason you would need this addressing scheme is
if you wish to turn your computer into some sort of server. This would allow you to give out one address to everyone, and they could then use that address to connect to your server while you were connected to your ISP.
As such it doesn’t affect the speed.
Windows XP problem
I am using WinXP Pro. My operating system doesn’t open “Network Connections” sometimes. I have also figured out that my modem (Apache HCF V.92 56K PCI) drivers are not compatible with it, though this device previously worked fine with this OS.

Editor replies: Network connections have nothing to do with a modem or its driver. If the OS has detected your modem previously, then the drivers are fine and you can verify them in the Control Panel > Modems > Diagnostics > Query Modem. IF the test is successful then your modem is fine.
If not, then you need a new modem.
Secondly, try deleting the Network Connections and reconfiguring them again. Get a reliable CD and try installing from that. Open the Task Manager and go into Processes. Double click on the setting.
See what happens. See what programs are responding and why. See which service is responding (check your CPU) when it works and which responds when it doesn’t.
You’ll figure out your problem from there.

Another problem: in my computer I found “folder.htt” and “desktop.ini” files that came from the net. As I did not know much about these virus files I removed them from view folder. As result, the web page would not open as a web page.

Regarding your second problem, it appears that the virus has affected your operating system completely. I am afraid you will have to reformat your disk and reinstall Windows.
SMS problem
I can’t get my icq lite to send the sms messages to my cell phone although it acknowledges that the message is sent succesfully to the recipient. What could be the problem?

Editor replies: Many users face this problem with ICQ. According to ICQ administration, the SMS has to pass through multiple channels to be delivered. From the satellite to phone lines, and a lot more in between. So it is very hard to ensure that it actually reaches it’s intended destination even though their servers recieve it fine. Printing halts
I have HP640C printer. Lately, it has developed a problem that it hangs during printing without completing the job. The partially done document displays garbled text and some binary numbers. Please help.

Editor replies: It is possible that a virus has caused this problem creating havoc with the driver and system files that the printer uses. Remove your printer drivers and reinstall them. If that doesn’t work, get the latest drivers from the HP site and even if that doesn’t work, We would suggest that you reinstall Windows after formatting your hard disk.
Getting rid of Yaha.K
There is a new virus (Yaha.K) spreading. It comes in email attachments ending in .scr, .exe or .com.
