EARTHLY MATTERS

This is with reference to Rina Saeed Khan’s column titled ‘I remember...’ (Jan 8-14). I wonder why her column gets published under the slug ‘Earthly Matters’, for Ms Rina barely discusses them once a month. Especially, the piece I am referring to didn’t exactly discuss ecological or environmental concerns.

It indeed feels good to recall one’s good old days, but it would be better if Ms Khan stays within the parameters of her column and sticks to what the readers expect from her as an environmentalist. Many issues need to be raised to increase the level of awareness among people. They should be the main focus here.

On a more positive note, the photo feature titled ‘Something fishy’ by Rabail Baig in the same issue was a delightful read. It is good to know that someone out there cares for fish and appreciates what lovely pets they can be. Thank you for that.

DIVAS OF YORE

Your cover story on the leading ladies of Pakistani cinema, 'Divas of yore' (Dec 18-24) was outstanding. The bits about Neelo, Javed Jabbar's first English movie and Umar Marvi being the first Sindhi movie to be made in Pakistan in 1956 were very interesting to read.

The piece by R.M. titled 'Golden girls' and the photos courtesy Guddu Film Archive were quite a treat, for they took one down memory lane to a time when cinema flourished in the country. I believe Pakistan still has a

lot of talent and directors like Shoaib Mansoor, Mehreen Jabbar and the like need to train actors, writers and directors.
