Friends or Foes

When you’re big, the fallout from a high-profile friendship is big news, too, writes Alice Fisher

An A-list pal gives a touch of class to even the lowliest celeb, but while friendships should be about loyalty and platonic love, judging by recent newspapers they’re also about landing each other in a heap of trouble.

Britney probably thought Christmas had come early when she was invited to party with new girlfriends Lindsay and Paris, but their knickerless nights out have led fans to email her website pleading with her to calm down. Danny DeVito appeared on a US chat show still drunk after a night out with George Clooney and has been apologising for his slurred opinions on President Bush ever since. And the Gallagher brothers befriended Robbie Williams after he left Take That, but they fell out so badly that Robbie is recording derogatory lyrics about Noel 10 years later.

Bad form, boys, but leave it to the girls to have a real catfight. Mrs Cruise and Mrs Beckham’s friendship is said to be strained after Victoria treated Katie’s recent wedding as a networking event. Probably not as strained as Javine Hylton and Alesha Dixon’s relationship since Javine was caught in bed with Alesha’s husband, MC Harvey. Nice. And Kate Moss is rumoured to be so cross with Agent Provocateur designer Serena Rees for leaving her husband Joe Corre for the Clash’s Paul Simonon that she’s refused to appear in more ads for the underwear giant. Honestly, you celebs, if you can’t play nicely, maybe you shouldn’t play at all.Dawn/Observer Service
