Skinny Jeans

By T. U. D.

There are a multitude of new trends in jeans, so for fashion followers it is time to overhaul their wardrobe

Popularised by Angelina Jolie and Kate Moss, the fit of jeans is now ankle-hugging with boot-cut. These ‘skinny’ jeans are must-haves with varieties including slim fit, cigarette and skin tight being the most popular. If you want to avoid a ‘painted on’ look, try a 14-inch leg variety rather than the typical 10-inch or 12-inch leg, as a longer length even with a larger ankle opening will give a longer, leaner line without looking like you showered in your jeans.

Dark shades including ink, midnight black and blue black are top sellers but if such dark hues aren’t your style, the alternative new look is ‘washed and gently worn’. Please note battered and torn are last year’s style and should be avoided. The darker the shade of the jeans, the slimmer the look!

If one has a well-formed figure, the longer 14-inch straight-leg cut skinny wannabe jean style is preferable. Long-belted tunics, kurtis, dolman-sleeve tops and bell-sleeve tops work very well with skinny jeans and if they are long enough to cover the mid-thigh, even a woman with heavier thighs can look good with this look.

These jeans can be paired with tall boots to flatten thick calves. Heels can give a leg-lengthening look; pointy-toed flats also work but to a lesser degree.

The one golden rule that should never be broken is to only buy those pairs of skinny jeans that complement one’s figure. Like all other fashion trends, this one should also be avoided at all costs if it does not suit the wearer.

On another note, all the conservative parents, aunts and grannies can heave a sigh of relief because after two years of midriff bearing low rise jeans, the waistlines are also slowly on the way up. So pair the hipsters with extra-long tees and tanks to cover the midsection, for a preppy and ‘covered’ look.
