The ultimate nail fashion

By Aisha Akif

The French manicure is a style of shaping the nails and painting them with pink and white polish, writes Aisha Akif

From a sixteen-year-old to a college graduate, a young working lady to a middle-aged mom and even older, females love make-up. While the eyeliner and lipstick maybe sufficient for the day-to-day routine, sometimes doing nails is as important as applying make-up for most.

In the mid `70s, a nail care company in America introduced ‘the French manicure’. Ever since then, the pink and white manicure has been the ultimate nail trend and remains as popular to date. It's a style of shaping the nails and painting them with pink and white polish. The entire nail is painted pink while the tips are painted with bright white polish.

Its natural, chic and contemporary look is what makes it a favourite among women all over the world. What's even better about it is that it's suitable for all kinds of occasions looking great with the most casual jeans to the dressiest outfits. With beauty salons opening rapidly, getting a French manicure done professionally isn't all that big a deal and not that pricey either. It can also be done at home, too, with the help of a file, nail polish and a bit of patience.

Start by washing hands thoroughly. Massage and rinse them before drying, then apply moisturizer. Use cotton dipped in nail polish remover to get rid of any old polish. Push back cuticles using a wood stick or cuticle pusher so that the nail surface is clean and healthy. Apply a clear base coat as it leaves a smooth surface to apply polish on and helps prevent nails from chipping.

With a stable hand carefully paint the tips of nails with white nail polish. Let it dry before applying another coat for more opaqueness and definition. Allow polish to dry completely between coats. Finally, selecting a sheer pale pink polish, paint the entire nail with it to secure the white tips and finish the look. Give it ample time to dry to avoid smudges. You can finish with a clear topcoat to protect the French manicure.

It’s a slow and tedious procedure but the results are well worth it. With all sorts of make-up available in stores, one can easily get French manicure kits almost everywhere.
