The lawn bandwagon

Lawn prints have become the latest craze for the fairer sex. The variety available is mind-boggling as more and more designers have joined the fray, writes Saima Salman

The mornings are becoming warmer, the afternoons are sweltering, thus the most essential buy this summer is a whole new wardrobe. No matter how much one loves georgettes the sun makes it unbearable to don anything but the softest and the lightest fabric. It’s time to slip into a cool lawn outfit, spray on a fruity perfume and slide feet into those single strapped slippers.

In the past the most irritating fashion faux pas was bumping into somebody wearing the exact same print in lawn as you. This has been aptly remedied this season since the variety available in the lawn fabric is mind-boggling. Not only does one get to pick some pretty neat prints, designers have gone many steps further this summer.

There is a wide choice of embellished lawns, which means that the fabric has been given a face-lift by putting on sequins, beads or even mirror work. Then there is the embroidered lawn that comes with worked necklines and sleeves. One of the most popular trends is the lawn suit accompanied with chiffon or georgette dupattas. And, of course, with quality the prices have also gone up.

Whereas lawns and voiles were considered a relatively inexpensive buy, this year the prices of the better quality suit pieces begin anywhere near Rs1,000 and go up to Rs2,000.

In the past, lawn prints were the product of just a few big textile manufacturing brands, which also produced big budget advertisements that everyone waited to catch on television. Many super models started their careers modelling in these advertisements.

Nowadays designers of all categories have jumped onto the lucrative lawn printing bandwagon. Every five - and four-star hotel holds ample exhibitions showcasing lawn prints by different designers.

One notices that the trend this summer as far as colours are concerned is to pull all stops. There are suits available in loud garish blues and greens as well as the soft, earthy hues for those who prefer the lighter palette. Whatever the colour the idea as usual is to stay and look as cool as a cucumber.
