To say that Sukkur is an ancient city is to state an obvious historical fact. Old Sukkur has no timeline as such. Around 711 AD, the Arabs invaded Sindh led by 17-year-old Muhammad Bin Qasim, and Sukkur along with Sindh and lower Punjab became part of the Umayyad Caliphate. Later, it came under the Mughal empire. The legacy of Akbar the Great can still be seen in the form of Sath Sathian on the edge of River Indus.
This beautiful building commemorates the death of seven Hindu sisters or friends, who killed themselves when the army of Muhammad bin Qasim invaded Aror. During the reign of Akbar a grand monument was constructed on the site. On the top of this monument are old graves which resemble those of Makli and Chowkandi, with their unique structure and architecture.
Far across the Indus river, one can see one of the most spectacular bridges of Pakistan, which is painted in silver. It was constructed by General Ayub Khan and is, therefore, called Ayub Bridge.
Apart from dancing date palms and the steady river that crisscross Sukkur, the conspicuous landmark of the city is the Mir Masum Shah Minaret. Being 100 feet high, it provides a magnificent view of the area surrounding it.
Near the minaret is the city's most popular bazaar. Right in its centre stands the clock tower that was built during the British era. Hence, when seen from the top it resembles the British flag.
One of the most popular destinations for Hindus in Pakistan is Sadhu Bela. It is built on an island that came into being as River Indus changed its course. Non Hindus need permission from the archaeology department to visit the temple. Another important historical site of the city is on the Bukkar Island. This is an ancient fort with its walls falling apart due to neglect.
The trip to this magnificent city will remain incomplete if you don't visit the famous people of the Indus river, the Mohannas. They are known for their skills of manoeuvring huge Indus boats. One can ride their handmade boats. They charge according to the time and the type of boat.
The blind dolphins can also be spotted during the boat ride. These species are only found in the Indus River and the area between Sukkur and Guddu Barrage is their habitat.
