Colour my lips

By Saima Salman

The lipstick colours in vogue this season are generally pastels. Pale lips and smoky eyes are part of the look most women want to sport these days, writes Saima Salman

No matter how busy they are, one item of make-up that women use extensively is lipstick. Even busy housewives try to apply lipstick before they step out of the house. Although experts believe that the colour of the lipstick should complement the eye make-up, most women apply lip colour without regard to how they have made up their eyes.

One of the longest lasting trends was the matt finish lipstick that became a rage some years ago. Since dry, stick-to-your-mouth, long-lasting colour was in demand, matt lipsticks that were quite pricey back then, became popular among working women who could not touch up their lips every few hours. “The dry look is out,” says one beauty expert. “Dry lipstick just makes your lips look chapped and besides they are so out of style now,” she further adds.

The lipstick colours in vogue this season are generally pastels. Since pale lips and smoky eyes are the look most women want to sport these days, markets are bursting at the seams with peaches and pinks. As our Asian skin tones are not exactly suited to the pure pinks that are more appropriate for a fair skinned person, the pinks in our markets are brown based or have a hint of warmth to their palettes to suit our complexion.

According to another make-up artist the more natural your lips look the better it is. Women are still using maroons and reds but are giving a natural line to their lips. No more elongating your lips with a lip liner and no more making yourself look pouty all the time. So throw away those lip pencils and brushes (or at least put them at the back of the drawers) because the most lustrous, moisture laden, creamy lipsticks are available that can be applied to the lips directly like the good old days.
