Out-of-the-sack look

By Sibtain Naqvi

The males of our society are coming out of their shells and shedding off the traditional dull shirts of yore. Now in vogue are button-down cotton shirts in all sorts of funky colours and designs, writes Sibtain Naqvi

The archetype of a well-dressed male is one with a crisp shirt, neatly tucked into a pair of trousers, without a wrinkle or looseness around the middle. Right? Wrong!

Today’s metrosexuals are celebrating their newfound liberty in a different, albeit comfortable way. Instead of a tucked in shirt, the new look is to leave the shirt blissfully hanging out while the trousers do not have to contrast or match it.

The idea is not to be dressed up but dressed down, even if this ‘casual’ ensemble has been meticulously put together. The targeted look is a sort of a ‘just-got-out-of-the-sack’ as the executive look is too stuffy for a night out with friends.

This metrosexual look has been around since the ’70s and early ‘80s and the trend has recently been revived.

Now rated highly by the popular website dedicated to the would-be Adonis’, www.askmen.com, this summer’s button down shirts are all set to become the next kurti craze. The preferred fabric is usually cotton although quite a few people are seen wearing silk. These cotton shirts can be full sleeved or half, and are shorter than the ones you tuck in, coming to about the middle of the trousers pockets. These designs are of an eclectic sort: pin stripes, chequered patterns, and even Hawaiian prints.

Those with expanding waistline must thank the makers of this new look because nothing hides away the pounds better than this attire.

While the shirts are certainly a welcome advance keeping in mind the warm climate, the colours that accompany them are the icing on the cake. Gone are the dark blues, blacks and grays worn by men for ages. The liberated man of today combines his khakis with soft pastels and light hues. Also in vogue are pale yellow, sky blue, lime green and fuchsia while peach and even pink are spied here and there. The shirts can be found at most of the major designer outlets and are slowly making inroads in middle class shopping stores. Their prices range from a paltry hundred to a few thousand. They have the potential of being around for sometime to come.
