Room carpeting may have become outdated for now, but the warm look cannot be denied. That is why small rugs have now taken a centre stage on floors to underline the interior. Not only do rugs make rooms cozier, they also serve to accent and complement other furnishings.Rugs are common and ever-trendy interior-solutions as far as the flooring is concerned. They are available in a wide range of colour combinations, floral patterns and oriental textures. They have the ability to create synchronization between furniture and the rest of the room scheme. As centre-pieces, throwers, runners and wall hangings, ready-made rugs are one of the best ways to obtain warmth, comfort and beauty.
Adequate placement of these small carpet pieces on a floor softens the rigidity of the surroundings. As a surface covering, rugs protect floors and provide a safeguard against falling.
Rugs also have multi-faceted applications. They can be effectively used to change the appearance of decorative items. A rug under a centre table that has glass top changes the entire look around it.
Teamed with floor cushions in the corner rugs form a complete sitting area. As a centre-piece, they are highly appealing and as a wall hanging they are an ideal form of vertical furnishing.
To gain the maximum in beauty and use, a rug beneath a dining table should be longer than the table and the chairs which are placed around it. While in front of a fireplace in winter a colourful rug offers the coziest sitting. The use of needlepoint stair-runners and throwers before doors is also in fashion these days.
However, the selection of rugs needs some thinking before purchase. Single-colour and machine-woven synthetic rugs are ‘in’ nowadays as in warm climate they absorb comparatively lesser heat and maintain a cool and fresh atmosphere in the room.
In contrast, handmade oriental rugs are considered to be of great value because they have intricate designs. The value of these rugs depends upon the size of the weaving. Tightly woven rugs are among the most expensive of all floor coverings because they have greater durability.
Woolen, yarn, fibre, nylon or synthetic in texture, small rugs are popular decorative accessories, which require practically no maintenance and are especially suitable for modern homes where casual elegance is the goal.
