Are we doing our best?

By Sadia Hasan

There is a need for informed and sensitive reporting related to child labour, writes Sadia Hasan

Workshops and seminars are often held on the subject of media and its responsibility towards various national and international issues and human rights. But one hardly sees seminars on child labour, one of the most painful issues existing Pakistan and South Asia.

Admittedly, our country’s press is alert to the problem and does not hesitate in highlighting cases of child labour in the various fields. It does so on its own and not at the prompting of anyone –– the government or NGOs. But, as an observer, I would like to draw the attention of the electronic media to an important aspect.

A foreign writer once said, “The media should not take up and report the condition of children only as events, but should continuously discuss the process that leads to the occurrence of these events and the steps that can prevent their occurrence.”

Informed, sensitive and professional journalism is a key element for improving the quality of reporting about human rights and society. The daily challenge for newspapers, journalists and other media representatives is particularly felt in the coverage of child labour and its implications.

To inform the public effectively, journalists must be fully aware of the need to protect children and promote their rights without damaging freedom of expression.

In Pakistan, the private channels have just stepped into the field. The private sector can play an effective role in highlighting the issue. It is desirable to avoid sensationalism, but at the same time the truth must be told.
