Open Eyes

Now here is an album that is sure to tantalise your musical taste buds. Originally from Northern Ireland, Snow Patrol first exploded into the music scene in 2004 with their debut album, Final Straw. It would be naïve to expect the band to digress from the same sound that saw their previous album become a phenomenal success. And so it proves: Open Eyes has taken the formula of the last album and magnified it.

Their hit single, Chasing Cars has been making waves on the local radio stations for the last few months and is an absolutely brilliant track. The opening tracks You’re All I Have and Hands Open seem to inject the right amount of energy early on in the album, something that was lacking in their previous ventures.

Here onward, the album gradually goes from one extreme to the other. Shut Your Eyes has an indie/ punk feel to it, but is quite relaxed at the same time as opposed to the preceding tracks. The lyrics kick in quite late but make up for the delay. The optimistically titled You Could Be Happy has soft angelic music running in the background and is in sharp contrast to the rugged voice of lead singer Lightbody, but a beautiful track nonetheless. In Set the Fire to the Third Bar, Martha Wainright helps Lightbody turn it into a gloriously yearning ballad.

Barring songs like Headlights on Dark Roads and Make This Go On Forever, every track on the album has the blood and bones to be a single. The only downside is that with Lightbody singing with such emotion, the album can become a tad bit depressing.

Even so, with a dynamic fusion of several alternative styles together with the perfect mix of rock and electronic sounds, the album has something in it for everyone and is worth the purchase. — Rahim Virani
