Strains from Bach’s klavier, Beethoven’s sonata, Chopin’s ballad and Schumann’s unfinished sonata flowed unfalteringly, stunning the audience with their sheer intensity. It was a small gathering which imbibed this rich offering at a local hotel recently. Small, not particularly but because the attendance was low because only a handful amongst those present were truly appreciative of the magic in the air.
Young Usman Anees was the solo performer who was delivering the matchless notes of the old masters with an ease and confidence which belied his age. What further astounded the audience was a short piece from his own composition titled Fantasia in D major. Usman started taking piano lessons at the age of eight and without any formal training abroad, has mastered the complexities of Western classical music.
Classical music has restricted scope in Pakistan and when a performance such as that by Usman comes along, it is mostly a clueless audience which is present, having neither the understanding nor the courtesy to be appreciative.
Walking in during the recital, talking incessantly and answering cell phones are common practices. But there still are enough music buffs who can understand the intensity of such performances and organisers should ensure that only those deserving of such entertainment be invited and also that all etiquettes be maintained. — M.A.R.
