Monk

Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), the ‘defective detective’ is back and doing what he does the best — solve mind-bending cases and fighting new phobias simultaneously.

He continues to solve the dirtiest of all cases along with the ever-dependable team comprising Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), Lieutenant Disher (Jason Gray Stanford), Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram) and Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard). They take on assorted opponents during this third season, including the mafia, the FBI and even an accused chimpanzee.

In the season premiere, Mr Monk Takes Manhattan, Monk goes to New York City to investigate a lead on Trudy’s murder given by Dale the Whale in the last season. He doesn’t move ahead with the lead but solves a case involving the murder of an ambassador, never ceasing to amaze in the remaining episodes. In Mr Monk Takes His Medicine, he is temporarily cured. He gets a new assistant in Natalie in Mr Monk and the Red Herring and meets a 20 months old baby in Mr Monk and the Kid.

Be it a murder in a panicking room or one in the city’s largest supermarket, in broad daylight or during the city’s blackouts, Monk excels in all, uttering: “I think I solved the case” while overcoming his obsessive compulsive disorder. Join him solve baffling cases in this amazing four-disc set, now available on DVD. — Omair Alavi

Intolerable Cruelty

If the cover shows George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones as cast members, watching the movie should be an obvious choice. But even if one does go beyond the biggies of Hollywood, a light and romantic storyline awaits the viewer in Intolerable Cruelty.

The film certainly has not been released recently, but it is one that manages to grow on the viewer with its mildly warm charm despite portraying the darker side of a woman. While Clooney is at his wittiest best, creating that acute and laser sharp sarcastic aura that the movie possesses, Zeta-Jones never misses a beat at playing pretty and invulnerable as the flirtatious dialogues between the two continue.

Miles Massey (George Clooney) is a formidable divorce attorney in the city of Los Angeles, who is at the top of his game with an amazing portfolio. He takes up an unusual case from his client against Marilyn Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a woman who fancies independence with a lot of money. She changes husbands as easily as changing her earrings, has her real estate multi-millionaire husband, Rex Rexroth, nailed down and wishes to settle for a wealthy divorce agreement, obviously losing the case to Miles. She tries again, this time with hubby number infinity, an oil tycoon, Howard Doyle, before she realises that real satisfaction comes not through money but love, and who else would she find true love in but Miles himself, which surprisingly leads to yet another twist.

An amazing film; make sure to peruse the pre-nup agreement thoroughly before you get down on a knee for a fair damsel. — Tahir Yahya
