Fatima Suraiya Bajia was the chief guest at Third Eye Vision, an art exhibition held at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), featuring over a hundred paintings by Marium Khan, a teenager with Down’s syndrome.
Despite her learning disability, Marium has a remarkable sense of colour and composition and her art has also been featured at the Utopia Station Art Project of 2004 in Munich, Germany. Third Eye Vision draws attention to the need for acceptance of special children in the mainstream.
The exhibition was a celebration of Marium’s achievements by her parents Dr Jamal Ara and Professor Asad Khan. Among Marium’s teachers present were Sam Haq, director of the Special Children Educational Institute (SCEI); Akhter Hilal Zaberi, director of the Fixon School of Arts and Creative Techniques (FACTS); and Aasiya Faris Sachwani, a speech-language pathologist from AKUH. Professor Afroze Ramzan, director NICH and the Consular General of Korea were among the guest speakers. Bajia appreciated her work and encouraged the artist with words which she is no doubt a master of. — Saima S. Hussain
