The M Live show series, initiated in early 2002, was a cutting-edge concept of its time, held in a small cafe just off Zamzama Boulevard in Karachi. Over the years, it has served as a solid platform for the new as well as the well-known, providing an opportunity for upcoming bands to perform live in a cosy environment before their fans and friends, and get TV coverage.
After a brief hiatus, the live show is back under the M Live Nights label, a series of events where artistes perform before live audiences and television. The concert series was relaunched at a popular franchise on March 24 this year, and carries a distinctly different touch from its parent programme.
With anticipation running high, one expected to see some better known names from the music scene play for the first evening of the new series. Disappointingly though, the show featured Aws and Imik — names that didn’t exactly ring a bell. The upside, however, is that the organizers promise to bring in better known artistes like Noori, Jal, Fuzon, Amir Zaki in their upcoming shows.
Aws is a band comprising Ahmed (lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist), Salman (bass guitar), Shezi (lead guitarist and backing vocals) and Faraz (drummer). Imik, on the other hand, is a crew of random artistes who perform whenever they can get together or someone else chips in to play under the band’s title. A total of eight songs were played in the show, apparently satisfying all the fans present. Although both the bands made an effort to do justice to their music as per their experience and talents, one couldn’t help but feel an acute lack of creativity in the performance.
The concert did have its share of hiccups including sound department malfunctions, unnecessary delays caused due to television retakes and an undesirably loud volume. Besides, due to space restrictions, all backstage happenings had to happen right before the audience. During the show, a staggering number of people flooded the tiny donut shop, seeing an opportunity to socialize in the backdrop of live music. Yet, thanks to their unfaltering appreciation, the show was able to sail smoothly over the lows and the bumps.
Present at the occasion were members of the Kazmi family including Sahira, Nida and Ali. And although tender footed, the organizing team comprising largely of young people, managed to pull off the show with commendable effectiveness. Directed and produced by Wajahat Rauf, the recordings are aired on The Muzik every Friday at 10:00pm.
