An ode to a cause

By Zaynab Shakir

A show of Faiza Sami, Nomi Ansari and Zehra Kachelo’s collections held last week in Lahore was a collaborative effort by Asad Tareen of The Designers and Depilex, and aimed at raising funds for the latter’s Smile Again Foundation.

The setup seemed perfect for a perfect show until the heavens opened up the floodgates, resulting in a hassled spokesperson announcing that the show would now be held indoors.

The evening began with a welcome address by Musarat Misbah highlighting the workings of the foundation and their efforts to give female burn victims another chance at leading normal lives. She criticized those who appreciate beautiful women but remain indifferent to the physical and psychological plight of burn victims.

Dr Umer Adil followed up with a sobering presentation to drive home the reality of the issue. The guest of honour was Bashiran bibi, a victim of an acid attack whom the guests welcomed with a mixed response.

Faiza Sami showed her bridal and formal line with ZQ, Tanya Shafi and Misha on the ramp. The designer’s signature style with vibrant block prints, motifs and clean lines rendered a quaint yet trendy feel to the collection. Among her works is also an effort to revive the ‘80s coatie, heavily embroidered blouses and the lehnga. Accessorising the ensembles were emerald and ruby chandelier earrings by Amna Faraz.

Zehra Kachelo’s jewellery was an ode to stones, targeting the hip younger generation. Known primarily for her designs in gold and silver, this was Kachelo’s first such venture. A variety of precious and semi-precious stones were embellished with feathers and seashells to create elaborate neck pieces. Simple outfits in basic hues by Deepak Perwani provided the backdrop.

Nomi Ansari set up a summery tone next with his V9 Vaneeza lawn print collection combining bold florals with psychedelic prints. Nomi’s formal collection comprised flowing chiffons in bright yellows trimmed with fluorescent greens, pinks and neutral beiges adorned with striking magenta and ferozi sequins. The designer’s attempts at experimentation with colours and cuts were evident in this collection.

Deserving special mention here was the ethereal pale blue lehnga worn by Mehreen Syed. Mehreen’s poise and grace at carrying it off to perfection deserves kudos, and her confidence at taming the ramp made it clear why she’s being touted by the who’s who of the fashion industry as the next best model from Lahore. It was also refreshing to see promising new faces such as Misha, Rachel and Sanam. Though well-choreographed, the event fell short of delivering its best due to flawed lighting. Concluding the evening was the surprise guest, Begum Nawazish Ali, who inarguably stole the show with her trademark “jaani” and hilarious statements that had the audience in stitches. Dinner was served out on the terrace, a welcome chance for socializing with one’s favourite designers.
