Ballroom blitz

By Mansoor hasan

lt was kind of a geek-meets-chic affair for the Isloo crowd who went to see the launch show of a brand of jeanswear. The show organizers worked hard to keep all those who attended the brand’s first ever show in Islamabad intrigued. And judging from the engaging show that was put on and the response that emanated from the crowd, it can be said that all the hard work paid off.

What made the event stand out even more was that there was no ramp as such and the guests either stood around or sat down while the models casually strutted about. Even though there were no known faces, the new lot comprising Sonia, Ash, Fahad Gilani, Khurram, Junaid, Mahvish, Serena, Shahana, Shahrukh and Zeeshan managed to put up a good show.

However, there were a few celebrities among the guests to lend glamour and oomph to the proceedings and prominent among them was well-known model Mehreen Syed who looked ravishing in black, closely followed by Rezz Ali Shah, haute couturier Amna Malik, and veteran TV actress Laila Zuberi with her pretty daughter Tania. Director Imran Malik of Tere Bin Jiya Na Jaye also put in a brief appearance while model-cum-telly presenter Iram Bokhari flirted with the limelight as did singer Huma Khwaja, clinging on to and cootchie-cooing only with Saima Shirazi.

The high of the evening was the sequence which had new kids Zeeshan and Mahvish captivating everyone with their sizzling salsa moves. In fact the two stole the show

The concept and choreography of the fashion presentation was very much in line with the raison d’etre of the brand, Levi’s, being promoted. The sequence with Fahad Gilani and Khurram Shah sauntering and prancing around chairs was definitely a cool note of the evening. And then there was also the trio of babes who made an evident impact as they moved around and circled together in complete harmony. But the high of the evening was the sequence which had new kids Zeeshan and Mahvish captivating everyone with their sizzling salsa moves. In fact, it would not be wrong to say that the two stole the show. The ballroom-like venue with its dance floor and strobe lights was the perfect setting for holding the affair.

Choreographer Mariam Pasha was in fine fettle showing that apart from designing she can choreograph as well. Make-up whiz Atif was another newcomer who showed that he had what it takes to become a force to reckon with.

But everything wasn’t picture perfect. At one stage, the long gap between sequences got so prolonged that some people wondered if the show was over. And then there was the over two-hour wait for things to commence. But considering that the event was a first for many of the people associated with it, this time we can let the organizers Abbas Bilgrami and J.K. Mirza of Dreams Unlimited get away with it. The launch was later held in Karachi as well.
