Artistic concepts

By Minha Hasan

Late last month saw Lahore-based photographer-cum-designer duo Guddu and Shanee open their first outlet called Resham Ghar at Zamzama Boulevard in Karachi that has now become a haven for designers. The event catered to the whos who of fashion including some leading designers, models, stylists and fashion editors.

Though arranged on a comparatively small scale, the event still served as a milestone as it saw yet another popular name on the Lahore fashion circuit who have made it big in a short span of time through their captivating imagery and styling concepts, make their mark on the very competitive Karachi fashion scene. Earlier, the opening up of The Designers which saw HSY, Sara Shahid of Sublime and Karma make it to the coastal metropolis, Guddu and Shanee are now among the pioneers of what could well turn out to be a popular trend.

Fashion photographers Guddu and Shanee have made their mark by being the first to venture into the development of the print wearing trend in both Lahore and now Karachi as well. A qualified team of designers and artists have made it possible for them to do so

Back to the event and the outfits on display were certainly innovative in terms of cuts and design. Many displayed Chughtai-esque images of what were Mughal art-inspired images. Speaking to Shanee, the other half of the husband-wife duo, he said that their label Resham Ghar started in 1992 as a retail and wholesale fabric shop with a wide range of variety in silk and other stuff. “At the time it was an innovation idea with a variety of designs, and colour combinations, etc, developing a reputation as a quality outlet. We now have two shops in Lahore and this one in Karachi is our third,” he said.

With the fashion scene back home ablaze with both veteran and emerging fashion photographers-cum-stylists such as Khawar Riaz, Ather Shahzad and Deevees, Guddu and Shanee have made their own mark by being the first to deviate from the established norm and venture into designing, specially the development of the print wearing trend in the country. A qualified team of designers and other artists have made it possible for the duo to provide clients with designer print suits that include art-based print suits named Wearable Arts, causal tops and kurtis, stoles, scarves, ponchos called EZ-Wear, home furnishings and more lines that are still in the pipeline.

“We believe in the development of quality designs that make us different from others. The concept of Wearable Arts is to mould an artist’s paintings to become a textile design printed on wearable clothing. It gives one the feeling of wearing a painting that would otherwise hang on a wall,” explains Guddu.

Through Resham Ghar, Guddu and Shanee say that their main objective is also to provide a wide range of prints as raw material to various designers so that they may use them in their collections as well.
