Countdown to LSA

By Faisal Quraishi

The announcement that the 4th Lux Style Awards ceremony is to be held in Karachi in October this year brings to an end the speculation that has dogged the awards shortly after last year’s ceremony in Dubai. To begin with, there were serious doubts about the LSA ever being held in 2005 and then also about the venue. Now all that remains to be seen is the manner in which they are held come October after the 2004 ceremony in Dubai was all but taken over by Indian artistes. And there’s also talk of the late holding of the 2005 awards.

The fourth LSA awards have entertained controversy on various counts, but mainly due to the absence of nominees in the fashion category this time round. Critics are of the opinion that with the method of nomination changed in fashion categories to that of plain announcements, it leaves no purpose for live awards.

An official press release states: “Over the years with persistent feedback from the fashion industry, LSA realized that what works for the entertainment business does not work for fashion. While actors and actresses are used to competing and being nominated the world over, fashion is more secretive, less competitive and its members are uncomfortable being pitted against each other. Therefore the decision in 2005 to do away with announcing fashion nominations although there will be the same procedure of voting for five nominations and then LSA Members appointed by the jurors will be asked to vote for a winner. There will be no announcement of fashion nominees. A winner shall be announced in each category on the day of the event.”

The decision has brought about scathing comments from the quarters concerned, alleging that the decision casts a dark shadow on this particular category.

The paucity of movies in the awards year 2004 has also forced the LSA team to limit the film categories to Best Film of the Year. According to Aijazz Gul, a film critic and a juror on the LSA film board, by no means have these categories been dropped permanently, but only because the quality of films produced during 2004 did not come up to the level of excellence that LSA wishes to acknowledge and reward. Then there is also the bifurcation of the television awards into PTV and satellite categories since PTV has a large viewership as compared to its satellite counterparts.

Earlier on, during the nominations by the panel of jurists in the music awards category things were hardly smooth sailing as some setbacks marked the proceedings. To begin with, the marked absence of Arshad Mehmood, one of the more prominent names in music, during both the initial meeting of the jurists’ panel and then the day of the voting raised quite a few eyebrows. If later he managed participate in the process is still not certain.

While justifying the newly introduced category of Best Live Music Act in this year’s LSA, it has been stated by the authorities that hardly any music albums were released in 2004 with most of the key bands focusing on encashing their existing music on the Indian soil. However, a large number of concerts were witnessed during the year, which has led to introduction of the category. Also, Khamaj is again on the list because it was released in 2004, it has been argued after some critics pointed out the repeat appearance of this Saqib Malik video.

However, what has caused some concern is the fact that in the live music category, acts have been selected based on songs. This is a nonsensical addition that was not present when the jurors of the music panel voted. This opens a whole new Pandora’s box as nominating songs has no relevance to live performance.

“How does Noori’s Manwa Re fit into the picture when it was released in 2001/2002, and these are the 2004 awards that are being adjudged. Likewise, Ali Azmat’s Na Re Naa is a 2005 cut,” says one of the music jurors. “The original list that was voted on by the jurors is what should have gone to the press.”
