On the first day of the celebrations falling on July 7, 2005, various groups of writers, poets and journalists arrived at Bhit Shah by a shuttle service that left for the destination from the barracks of the Sindh Secretariat in the afternoon. On this occasion, the culture and tourism minister inaugurated the music school for students to learn about folk music free of cost. Initially 20 students have been registered in the school.
A press conference was followed by a Sindhi-Urdu mushaira largely attended by Shamshir-ul-Hyderi, Ayaz Gul, Aelal Soomro, Imdad Hussain, Manzar Ayubi, Naqash Kazim, Zulfiqar Siyal, Afshan Seher, Tajal Bewas and Ghaffar Tabassum who recited poetry on the burning issues of karo-kari, water shortage and lawlessness. Abida Parveen, Ghaman Meerali, Mai Bhagi’s daughter Mai Sohni, Sohrab Fakir, Amber Mehek, Barkat Butt, Deeba Sehr, Sadiq Faqir, Hanif Lashari, Sheneela Ali and Tanveer Hussain sang the verses of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.
Earlier, guests belonging to various walks of life were welcomed by faqirs singing the kalaam of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai on the tamboora.
The second day started with literary conference that was held at the Sindh Museum in Hyderabad and presided over by Dr Nabi Bux Baloch. The speakers highlighted Bhittai’s poetry and services, and pledged to get Bhittai’s poetry published in all languages so that the world could hear his message through his poetry which is still in its original form.
On this occasion, Sughar Kutchery was held in which popular Sughars from all over Sindh recited riddles with fluency of expression. The Sughars are considered the protectors of the folk Sindhi language which is losing its importance due to the indifference on behalf of the government. It was also decided that an annual fair for children would be arranged.
A tableau based on Shah’s poetry in which he described the folk tale of Mumal Rano was the main attraction of the day in which prominent artistes performed. Later on, the day concluded with Raag Rang with the famous Raagi Faqirs performing.
