Clowning around

If you want to do something then you might as well do it big. This seems to be the motto of Tariq Amin and Kashif Haqqi these days as they set out to capture the local market by broadening their horizons and going international with Indispensable Communications. “No goleez just hits”, as the IC byline goes, is aimed at revolutionizing the local entertainment industry. On April 28, the company formally launched itself in Pakistan with five new singers in the entertainment industry putting in a performance at Karachi’s FTC auditorium.

The first song to be screened was Abbas Ali Khan’s Sun Re, a melodious track with a creative video that is all the rave these days, also featuring Tariq Amin. Next came Taimoor (bearing a strong resemblance to Sukhbir in black and oversized dark glasses) singing Khoey khoey, accompanied by a dance troupe with amazing choreography.

The third video to be flashed on screen was the world premiere of Hash’s remixed English track Guarantee, dominated by special effects. Definitely not for those who enjoy soft, melodious music this one.

To change the mood of the evening and mellow down the environment, the next crooner was unlike all the other three with long unruly hair. Arieb sounded off with an unplugged version, making up for the slow pace with his next song, Nach Dila Re. And like his song, the video was also quite different — realistic and not just stylish. It seems like fusion was the flavour of the evening. Riffat Sultana, the only female singer, unfortunately could not make it and let her apology note do the talking. A short preview of her song Mere Wafayain followed.

At this point, Tariq Amin and Kashif Haqqi, who brings the required management experience to IC, came on stage for an introduction and announced the last all-boy band to perform that evening, Seige. After three songs, namely Armaan, Police and Faaslay, they left the audience charged and pining for more.

Apart from the wait, the event which was for approximately 50 minutes, was a foot-tapping experience. If IC churns out the quality of music it did at the launch, the work is already half done.
